Embracing Change and Finding Direction
In our personal and professional growth, the journey often leads us through diverse experiences and learnings. From insightful knowledge-sharing to reaching personal milestones, each encounter offers valuable insights that shape our perspectives and propel us forward. With that, I would like to share some of my takeaways from recent endeavors, highlighting the importance of embracing change and finding direction amidst uncertainty.
Just Took a Big Step: Thesis Proposal Presentation Done
After countless revisions and months of anticipation, I finally had my thesis proposal presentation with my advisory committee and chair. The wait was long, but the outcome was worth every moment.
My panel not only appreciated my presentation but also provided valuable insights into multiple angles I can explore further. It's overwhelming yet incredibly fulfilling to receive such positive feedback.
This milestone marks just the beginning of a longer journey ahead as I prepare to dive into executing my research. Through this experience, I've learned to cherish and celebrate small victories, understanding that they pave the way for greater achievements.
As I look to the future, I'm reminded of the importance of maintaining hope and belief in the vision ahead, all while staying committed to hard work and dedication. Excited for what lies ahead! ??
Sharing Insights from the "Mencari Inspirasi" Webinar
Before 2023 ended, I attended the "Mencari Inspirasi" webinar hosted by Mencari Kreatif . Here, digital strategies were explored aimed at engaging youth in social issues, a crucial conversation in today's world. Kudos to my friend Robi Kate Miranda, ASEAN Youth Organization's Engagement Director, for her enlightening discussion on practical approaches to involving the younger generation.
Four essential strategies were highlighted: Static Content, Dynamic Content, Online Performances, and Gamification. It was noted how vital it is to tailor content to Gen Z, who make up 80% of the audience.
Relevant issues were also discussed, including Health Crises, Inflation, VAWC, and Climate Change. Creating engaging content on platforms like Canva, organizing social media competitions, and establishing online platforms with offline support were some of the suggested programs.
Effective communication involves understanding the audience, creating relevant materials and events, and adapting as needed. Makesense's Theory of Change was introduced, emphasizing storytelling, mobilization, and radical collaboration.
The effort of connecting with youth amid short attention spans was also explored. Some solutions anchored on segmented content, language precision, capturing attention in 15 seconds, and building credibility.
In a session led by Ramadhanti Firmaningsih, it was explored why hate speech occurs in youth social activism, revealing insights into generational clashes and the youth's quest for creative solutions.
It was discussed how despite challenges, youth movements demonstrated resilience by finding innovative ways to voice concerns, underscoring their pivotal role in shaping the narrative around social issues.
In the broader context of my passion for decent work for all, my main takeaway was the need to emphasize the urgency of involving young voices in addressing societal problems. Empowering youth initiatives is not just a choice but a necessity for a more inclusive future. Let's amplify youth voices and recognize their potential as catalysts for positive change!
Lessons from Movers Programme's "Leadership in Action" Webinar
Early January, I was able to participate in the "Leadership in Action" Webinar organized by the Movers Programme . It offered invaluable insights that reshaped our understanding and practice of leadership. Key takeaways from the session truly propel our leadership journeys to new heights.
Mastering Power and Influence
Effective leadership hinges on understanding the sources of power and influence. The webinar explored the difference between transactional and transformational leadership. Recognizing and harnessing this difference not only fosters collaboration but also empowers leaders to make a lasting impact on their teams.
Navigating Communication Styles
Communication lies at the heart of leadership success. The session emphasized honing various communication styles to exert positive influence. Drawing insights on difficult conversations, the webinar stressed the importance of choosing styles that foster constructive dialogue. Whether adopting a "Yes, And..." approach or using "I" messages, these styles empower leaders to build strong connections within their teams.
Embracing Difficult Conversations
Effective leadership requires the ability to navigate tough discussions. Lessons on handling challenging conversations highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces and practicing active listening. By shifting the focus from blame to contributions, leaders can engage in difficult conversations with empathy, driving meaningful results while preserving team dynamics.
These insights serve as a guiding light for professionals navigating the complexities of leadership. By embracing these learnings, we can lead with authenticity and purpose, inspiring positive change within our organizations.
Exploring Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture
Recently, I also completed an online course offered by the ASEAN Youth Organization through the AYO Academy. The course focused on focusing on food security, sustainability, and agriculture, with a particular emphasis on Southeast Asia.

Global challenges like population growth, climate change, and resource scarcity profoundly affect food systems worldwide, necessitating practices such as organic farming and resource conservation for food security and environmental protection. ASEAN nations and Japan are implementing strategies to enhance food security through sustainable agriculture, considering economic development and policy responses crucial for long-term sustainability.
In the Philippines, rapid population growth, urbanization, and climate change exacerbate food insecurity and poverty. Initiatives in sustainable agriculture, including organic farming and soil conservation, aim to address environmental degradation and promote biodiversity. Despite agriculture's economic importance, challenges like low productivity and limited market access persist, requiring policy interventions and government programs promoting self-sufficiency, infrastructure development, and partnerships with regional and international organizations. Adaptation strategies such as crop diversification and water management are crucial for ensuring food security and resilience in the face of climate change impacts.
With that, addressing food security and agricultural challenges requires a comprehensive approach integrating sustainable practices, policy interventions, and collaboration at various levels. By promoting sustainable agriculture and building resilience to climate change, the Philippines can strengthen food security and ensure the well-being of its population.
Navigating the Future: Empowering Youth to Tackle Poverty
Before November 2023 ended, I was fortunate to have been accepted as a participant for the Asia Youth Summit 2024 organized by the Global Youth Ambassador . Come January 2024, I was afforded the opportunity to represent my country the Philippines. Sadly, unforeseen circumstances prevented my physical attendance on the February 2024 culmination events. However, despite that challenge, I have truly learned a lot from this by engaging with my fellow youth in virtual sessions and assignments. I am happy to share the impactful insights and ideas that emerged from this transformative experience.
Under the theme "Navigating the Future: Empowering Adaptive Leadership and Gen Z Innovation," I was assigned on the sub-theme of "No Poverty." This resonated deeply with me, considering the socioeconomic challenges facing youth in Southeast Asia.
We were tasked to draft a declaration statement and propose a project to address poverty-related challenges. With that, I put forward a declaration that emphasized the urgent need to tackle youth unemployment, highlighting equitable access to education and skills development.
I also proposed a project that aims to bridge the gap between education and the workforce. By providing skills development workshops, career guidance, mentorship programs, and entrepreneurship training, the project seeks to empower young individuals for success and contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction.
Despite the youth's challenges, there exists is a shared commitment to creating positive change and building a better future for all. Reflecting on this experience, I am reminded of the power of collaboration and collective action in addressing global issues. Moving forward, I am excited to continue advocating for youth empowerment in the fight against poverty.
A Note on Navigating Uncertainty
Finally, with all these experiences in the recent months, I'm happy to share some realizations reflecting upon each of them. Life is a journey filled with twists and turns, and I often find myself at crossroads, wondering about the right path forward. In a world that often values early beginnings and linear trajectories, it's easy to feel like I'm running out of time or that opportunities are slipping away.
The Box of Routine
Transitioning from university to the early stages of my career sometimes feels like being confined to a box. Routine becomes the norm, and the initial excitement can wane. It's in these moments of regularity that I question my direction and purpose.
Chasing Goals and the Fear of Failure
Embarking on graduate studies often opens new doors and presents fresh goals. However, the journey can be tough, and my goals may seem distant and challenging. The fear of failure can cast a shadow on my aspirations, making it difficult to maintain the initial drive.
Balancing Enjoyment and Routine
Enjoying your job but feeling stifled by routine is a common dilemma. The thrill of something new is invigorating, but the anxiety that accompanies change can be a barrier. Striking a balance between routine and excitement becomes crucial for a fulfilling professional life.
Exploring New Territories
Venturing into a different field can be both exhilarating and intimidating. The vastness of possibilities may leave me feeling like a small fish in a vast ocean. Pinpointing the exact direction becomes a challenge, and the fear of being 'too late' to the game can be discouraging.
Overcoming the Fear of Starting Late
It's essential to recognize that everyone's journey is unique. Success doesn't adhere to a strict timeline, and there's no expiration date on opportunities. Each experience, regardless of when it occurs, contributes to my growth and learning.
Breaking Goals into Manageable Steps
If the goal seems overwhelming, we can break it down into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate progress along the way and understand that setbacks are a natural part of the journey. Leveraging my existing skills and experiences, they are valuable assets in any endeavor.
Embracing Change and Moving Forward
Closed opportunities can be disheartening, but they also pave the way for new possibilities. Reflecting on what truly interests me in the new field, I can take small steps toward those interests. Reaching out to those who have walked similar paths for guidance and support.
Final Thoughts
Remembering, it's never too late to take steps toward my goals. My journey is uniquely mine, and the twists and turns only add to the richness of my story. Embracing change, taking small steps, and finding joy in the process of discovering my path.
