Embracing Challenges Takes Endurance and Connection.

Creating human connection through physical movement in the natural environment.
As the final days of 2024 approached, I found myself reflecting on the year and thinking how I could bring it to a close on a high note. The decision to take on the JFK 50 Mile Challenge—In my case an 80-kilometer walk around my local lake—came almost spontaneously. (You can read about the history of it here https://www.artofmanliness.com/health-fitness/fitness/take-trjfk-50-mile-challenge/ ) I knew I wanted to finish the year strong, setting a tone of positivity and resilience for 2025. I wanted to wake up on New Year's Day feeling empowered, ready to build on the achievements of the past year and step into the new one with strength and self-belief. I had previously attempted this challenge and failed, so this was in part, an act of redemption.
The Journey Unfolds: The morning of the walk began with a cool, cloudy sky, offering a calm and easy start. My dog Laz kept me company as we clocked up the laps. As the sun rose higher, the day turned hot and challenging. Walking around Lake Hyland, I noticed subtle changes in temperature and breeze, this was me truly present and in the moment. I looked forward to short stretches of shade that gave relief from the heat. I began to view the lake and its surrounding parkland, a place so familiar to me with fresh eyes. It offered small but significant comforts as I pushed forward.
As the hours passed, I observed the dynamic nature of the people and the environment. From early morning walkers to families enjoying their day, the lake came alive with activity. Each group brought a new wave of energy and kept me focused on the rhythm of my journey. It was fascinating to notice the nuances of weather, the play of sunlight, and even the textures underfoot that made every lap feel unique.
Support and Connection: As the journey progressed, the physical toll was undeniable, but what truly lifted my spirits were the moments of human connection. One person came back and checked in on me several times throughout the walk, expressing how invested they were in my journey. Their encouragement was incredibly uplifting and gave me renewed determination to keep going. Additionally, a friend joined me during some of the most challenging parts of the walk. Their company and conversation provided a significant boost, reminding me that while the walk was a personal challenge, I wasn't alone.
These moments of connection, from kind words to shared steps, became a profound source of strength. They reinforced the idea that we are stronger when we acknowledge and accept support from those around us. Even brief interactions with strangers along the route made a difference, showing the quiet power of empathy and encouragement. It taught me that while some challenges must be faced alone, knowing when to reach out for a few words of encouragement or simply to share our struggles can make all the difference.

Reflections on Resilience: This walk was more than a physical challenge; it was a profound test of mental fortitude and resilience. With the hardest moments coming after the sun had gone down and the last people had left and I was alone. No one would know if I packed up and left a few laps early, I had still come such a long way. These thoughts played with me, tempted me, toyed with me. It is in these moments when your character is tested. I acknowledged these thoughts and pushed even harder. Through every step, I embraced the discomfort and persisted through the tough moments. This is what leads to profound growth.
This experience reinforced the importance of being open about our vulnerabilities and recognizing that the support we give and receive can be transformative. It reminded me of the value of leading with courage and showing others that struggles are a natural and essential part of growth.
This journey around Lake Hyland was not just a test of endurance, but a profound lesson in resilience, connection, and personal growth. It reaffirmed that while some challenges must be faced alone, the strength we draw from others and the support we offer can make all the difference.
As we step into the new year, let's embrace our vulnerabilities, reach out when we need support, and be there for others. Together, we can turn our challenges into triumphs and our journeys into shared experiences of growth and resilience.
