Embracing Challenges At The Heart of Innovation
By Gabriela Ruggeri , Managing Partner at Kamay Ventures & Overboost
In the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship and innovation, a crucial lesson has emerged from my journey as an entrepreneur and now a managing partner at Kamay Ventures: the importance of falling in love with the problem, not the solution. Throughout my experiences in building businesses and investing in new ventures, I’ve learned that true innovation is rooted in a deep, persistent focus on understanding and solving core problems.
In the vivid mosaic of Latin American entrepreneurship, economic volatility and political unpredictability are not mere hurdles; they are the very forges of innovation. In Argentina, for instance, entrepreneurs are transforming inflationary pressures into opportunities by crafting fintech solutions that provide unprecedented financial stability for consumers. Similarly, in Brazil, the rapid adoption of mobile technology is facilitating healthcare solutions that reach remote areas, demonstrating how infrastructural challenges can give birth to groundbreaking innovations.
In my early days as an entrepreneur, the thrill was often found in the chase for new, disruptive ideas. Yet, it quickly became evident that the most sustainable innovations arise from a profound engagement with real-world problems. It’s insufficient to be merely fascinated by solutions, as they can become obsolete with shifting market dynamics. The key lies in anchoring your venture on the enduring issues that people face, ensuring relevance and resilience.
Transitioning from entrepreneur to investor shifted my focus from implementing solutions to identifying and nurturing potential. Investment decisions transformed into bets on an entrepreneur's commitment to deeply understanding and creatively solving critical issues. We support those who demonstrate an ongoing willingness to learn, adapt, and iterate, which is fundamental in today’s ever-evolving business landscape.

Diversity in team composition not only brings varied perspectives to the table but also enhances the creativity and effectiveness of solutions. Operating across diverse geographical and cultural contexts in Latin America has shown me that such teams are better equipped to tackle complex challenges and drive sustainable innovation. At Kamay Ventures, we actively seek out teams that reflect this diversity, understanding its pivotal role in innovative problem-solving.
Philosopher Karl Popper once stated, "All life is problem-solving." This quote resonates deeply with the core of venture capital, especially in the world of startups, where every day presents a new set of challenges. Embracing this mindset is crucial for continuous improvement and growth.
Our mission at Kamay Ventures extends beyond financial investments; we invest in people. Entrepreneurs who are prepared to tackle challenges head-on and are eager to learn from each encounter embody the ideals we champion. By endorsing a problem-focused approach, we contribute not only to the success of individual startups but also to the broader narrative of innovation and sustainable development.
To all the budding entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, and fellow investors, let's commit to nurturing an ecosystem that values deep understanding, embraces diverse perspectives, and champions relentless problem-solving.
As we continue on this path, let us all remember the power of focusing on the problem, as it is truly the first step towards innovation and creating meaningful solutions that stand the test of time. Together, we can drive transformative change and create lasting impacts on society, particularly in the uniquely vibrant and challenging environment of Latin America.
