Embracing Career Therapy: Transforming Professional Lives

Embracing Career Therapy: Transforming Professional Lives

Those who know me are already familiar with my multifaceted professional career: education executive, college professor, podcast host, innovation and entrepreneurship #1 fan, public speaker, and high-performance coach. Over the years, I have developed a high-performance coaching practice that focuses on strengthening the minds of my clients, athletes, and executives, developing resilience to never quit growing, achieving unexpected limits of peak performance, and, more importantly, finding pleasure and balance in life while working hard and delivering at work (in the office or the field).

One of the many essential aspects of my private practice (with all my other things, I only take a handful of clients a year) is what I call "career therapy." My clients understand that living under pressure and pursuing success isn't just about having the right skills or making the right decisions. It's about nurturing the mind and spirit to withstand the stress and challenges of high-performance roles. This is where Career Therapy – a term I have come to use in my practice – plays a critical role. It's a counseling practice focused on individuals' professional careers, aiming to achieve and sustain peak performance at work by setting goals and developing the tools to achieve a limitless mindset while harmonizing their career aspirations with their lives and well-being.

Career therapy is unapologetically driven by professional success while learning to balance all other aspects of life. I have met many people who are unhappy because they have not achieved the professional success they deserve, and I work with them to get there. Period. It's not your personal therapy, divorce therapy, or any other version. It's about your success at work. We spend quite a lot of time at work just to be unhappy or unsuccessful.

Professional success is not exclusive to just a few and mighty. Anybody can succeed at work.

The Need for a New Approach: Traditional career counseling often focuses on resumes, interviews, and skill sets – undoubtedly essential elements. However, I've seen a more profound need in my work with professional athletes who strive to win and executives aiming to sustain peak performance. It's not just about the 'what' and 'how' of their careers, but also the 'why' and 'who.' Career therapy addresses this gap, offering a different professional development and growth approach.

What is Career Therapy?

Career therapy combines planning, support, mental skills, and career counseling.

It involves understanding an individual's career trajectory, professional goals, and the mental blocks or challenges they face in reaching them. Whether it's an athlete coping with the pressure of staying at the top or an executive feeling stuck in their career, this approach provides the tools and insights to help them overcome these hurdles.

The Process and Impact: In career therapy, the process often begins with an in-depth exploration of the client's current professional state and aspirations. This involves identifying their strengths, weaknesses, fears, and motivations. From there, we delve into targeted strategies to build resilience, enhance decision-making skills, and foster a limitless mindset. The impact? Peak and sustained performance, improved job satisfaction, and a more successful professional life.

Real-life Transformations: While maintaining confidentiality, I can share that career therapy has led to remarkable transformations.

A mid-management client, for instance, discovered new ways to participate in meetings and network with company executives, leading to a promotion that had been denied for years.

An athlete learned about success micro-habits, breaking a cycle of near success and finally achieving the top of the podium.

Incorporating Career Therapy into Your Professional Journey: Career therapy is for those at a crossroads or transition who need help getting unstocked. It's also a proactive tool for anyone seeking to professionally deepen their understanding of themselves.

Be unapologetically successful in your career. Do not let others doubt who you are and what you can achieve.

As they say in MMA, do not leave the decision in the hands of the judges (and many want to judge you for how far you can go based on their perception of your reality).

Become the high performer you know you are and get the promotions you deserve.
