Embracing the Balance: Returning to Work After Quality Time with Family and Friends

As the holiday season fades into memory and the new year unfolds, many of us find ourselves in a familiar position: returning to work after a well-deserved break. For me, this past holiday was not just about relaxation; it was a delightful opportunity to reconnect with family and friends, indulge in laughter, and perhaps consume a few too many cocktails. (Note to self: next year, limit the cocktail intake!)
The Joy of Quality Time
There is something magical about spending time with loved ones. Whether it is sharing stories around the dinner table, playing board games that inevitably lead to friendly bickering, or simply enjoying each other’s company, these moments remind us of what truly matters. They recharge our spirits and inspire us to bring that same joy into our professional lives.
As an Executive Virtual Assistant (VA), I have learned that the skills I cultivate at home—patience, communication, and a healthy dose of humour—are just as vital in my work with clients. After all, who would not want an assistant who can juggle tasks while cracking a joke or two?
Dedicating Quality Time to Clients
Now that I’m back at my desk (and yes, I’ve swapped my festive slippers for proper shoes), I am committed to dedicating the same quality time I spent with family and friends to my clients. Here’s how I plan to do it:
1. Prioritise Communication
Just like catching up with family, communication is key in any relationship. I aim to keep my clients updated regularly—not just about tasks but also about their goals and aspirations. After all, knowing what makes them tick helps me serve them better.
2. Infuse Fun into Work
Let’s face it: all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! So why not inject some fun into our professional interactions? Whether it is sharing a light-hearted meme or celebrating small wins together, I believe that a little laughter can go a long way in fostering strong working relationships.

3. Be Present
During my time off, I learned the importance of being present putting down my phone during family dinners (mostly) and truly engaging with those around me. This lesson translates beautifully into my work as an Executive VA. I strive to be fully engaged with my clients, understanding their needs and anticipating their challenges.
4. Maintain Work-Life Balance
Just as I enjoyed quality time with loved ones, I encourage my clients to embrace a healthy work-life balance as well. A happy client is often a productive client! By helping them streamline their tasks and manage their schedules effectively, I can contribute to their overall well-being.
A New Year, A New Commitment
As we step into this new year together, let us remember the importance of balance. Just as we cherish our time with family and friends, let’s also dedicate ourselves to our professional relationships. After all, every successful partnership is built on trust, communication, and a sprinkle of humour.
So, here is to returning to work with renewed energy and enthusiasm! Let’s make this year one for the books—filled with productivity, laughter, and perhaps just one more cocktail (but only if you promise not to tell anyone).
Cheers to new beginnings!
