Embracing the Art of Getting Things Done: Overcoming Procrastination with Intentional Space

Recently, a high-performing entrepreneur asked me for advice on overcoming procrastination and creating a sense of urgency even when there isn't a looming deadline. He thrives under last-minute pressure but wants to find ways to get things done on a timeline without the stress of a crunch. If you find yourself in a similar situation, this article is for you.

Here’s the thing: You’re not doing nothing.

That might sound like a double negative, but it's crucial to recognize that you are making progress, even if it isn’t immediately visible. Give yourself permission to lighten up. For instance, I always struggled with school assignments requiring an outline. I’ve published five books and have two more in progress, each meticulously structured. But I didn’t start with outlines. I began with the concepts I wanted to explore. My approach to any project, including speeches, is to focus on the desired outcome.

Consider this blog post. It’s written in a conversational style, as if we’re chatting over coffee. My thoughts flow freely onto the keyboard, much like they would in a live discussion. This informal approach reflects the creative process – where ideas are allowed to develop naturally.

Here’s how to tackle procrastination and harness your creative process:

  1. Acknowledge the Creative Process: When you accept a new task, your mind starts working on it, even if you’re not actively engaged. Embrace the idea that mental preparation is part of the process.
  2. Allocate Time for Ideation: I use short, five-to-ten-minute blocks dedicated solely to thinking about the concepts and outcomes. This time allows your mind to percolate ideas without the pressure of immediate productivity.
  3. Designate Work Blocks: Schedule focused work sessions. I typically set two-hour blocks, broken into smaller 20-minute segments. This structure helps in translating thoughts into tangible results.
  4. Create Space for Reflection: Allow yourself time to sit with a blank screen or a quiet mind. This blank space is crucial for your subconscious to work and generate ideas. It’s not wasted time but a fertile ground for creativity.
  5. Embrace the Flow: As deadlines approach, trust that your inner work is complete. When you’ve given yourself space and time, you’ll find that your thoughts and ideas flow more naturally into completion.

In summary:

  • Accept that you’re always working on your tasks, even if it's not immediately visible.
  • Give yourself dedicated time to think and reflect.
  • Break down your work into manageable segments.
  • Allow for creative space, knowing it’s essential for productive output.

By integrating these practices, you’ll find that the urgency you once relied on will evolve into a more balanced and proactive approach to your work. So, let go of self-criticism, and trust in the process. Let your creativity pour out, and watch how effectively you can meet your goals.
