Embracing the Art of "No Cherished Outcome": A Game-Changer for Life and Work

Hey there, fellow seekers of wisdom and growth!

Picture this: There I was, stuck in traffic, listening to Tim Ferriss 's podcast on Spotify . Elizabeth Gilbert, the mastermind behind "Eat, Pray, Love," starts talking about this concept called "No Cherished Outcome." And just like that – BOOM! – my mind was blown. ??

Let me tell you, this idea hit me harder than my first cup of coffee on a Monday morning. It's been a few days since I heard it, and I'm still reeling from its profound impact. So, buckle up, because I'm about to take you on a wild ride through this game-changing philosophy.

What in the world is "No Cherished Outcome"?

In a nutshell, it's about doing your absolute best without being attached to the results. Sounds simple, right? But oh boy, it's a mind-bender when you really dig into it.

Elizabeth Gilbert explained that she borrowed this concept from the Celtic poem. The idea is to approach life and work with full dedication and effort, but to let go of any specific expectations or desired outcomes.

Why it's a total game-changer:

1. Freedom from anxiety: When you're not obsessed with results, you can actually enjoy the process.

2. Increased creativity: Without the pressure of a "perfect" outcome, your mind is free to explore and innovate.

3. Resilience in the face of setbacks: If things don't go as planned, you're less likely to feel crushed.

4. Better relationships: Applying this to interactions with others can lead to more genuine connections.

My personal journey with "No Cherished Outcome":

Let me be real with you – this concept is HARD to implement. I'm a classic Type A personality, always gunning for specific goals and outcomes. But I decided to give it a shot, and here's what happened:

1. The Creative Project Launch:

I am about to release a passion project - very soon. Instead of obsessing over download numbers, sales, or reviews, I am focusing on creating something true to my vision and sharing it authentically. The peace of mind gained from this decision was incredible!

2. The Networking Event Revelation:

At a recent conference, instead of trying to make specific connections or achieve certain goals, I simply focused on being present and genuine in each interaction. The result? I made more meaningful connections than ever before.

3. The Family Dinner Breakthrough:

I applied this to a potentially tense family dinner. Instead of hoping for a specific outcome (please, no arguments!), I just focused on being my best self. It was the most relaxed family gathering we've had in years.

The challenges are real:

I won't sugarcoat it – letting go of cherished outcomes is tough. There are moments when I slip back into old patterns. But each time I manage to embody this philosophy, I feel a sense of freedom and peace that's utterly addictive.

Your turn to dive in:

So, here's my challenge to you: Pick one project or interaction this week and approach it with "No Cherished Outcome." Give it your all, but let go of any attachment to the result. Then, drop me a line and let me know how it went!

Remember, it's not about not caring. It's about caring so deeply about the process and your effort that the outcome becomes secondary.

Are you ready to free yourself from the tyranny of expectations? Let's embrace the art of "No Cherished Outcome" together!

Stay curious and keep growing,

Change is the only constant. Adapt you must.

I found your post while looking for a printable version of the prayer to hang in my office I feel the same and you summarized the concept so well. I can't stop thinking about that line and discussion between Liz and Tim. It's also a testament to Tim's listening ability that he picked it up from Liz's casual answer in the beginning of the show.

Krishna has already preached to leave the expectation and focus on the task at hand. It may seem simple but in the result demanding world practicing it for corporate jobs or your business will not work. You are valued only by the business you generate not your efforts. Hard but reality. Of course there is a scope of this concept in relationships.
