Embracing AI in Edtech: How Learning Genie Aligns with the U.S. Department of Education’s New Guidelines

The U.S. Department of Education recently unveiled “Designing for Education with Artificial Intelligence: An Essential Guide for Developers.” This guide is designed to help edtech developers, including product leads, innovators, designers, customer-facing staff, and legal teams, to ensure safety, security, and trust in AI products and services used in education.

Building on Previous Insights

The guide builds on the Department’s 2023 report, “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning.” As AI models and capabilities continue to evolve, the Department is committed to promoting innovative advancements in edtech to enhance teaching and learning across the nation’s education systems.

The E-Bike Analogy

A useful analogy from the 2023 AI report compares the use of AI in education to riding an e-bike. Just as a cyclist controls the direction and pace while conserving energy with the help of the e-bike’s drivetrain, educators and students should remain in control of their AI tools. This allows them to focus on impactful interactions and activities, maximizing the benefits of AI without losing autonomy.

Learning Genie’s Commitment to Safety, Security, and Trust

At Learning Genie, we have embraced these guidelines to ensure our AI products meet the highest standards of safety, security, and trust. We prioritize user control, actively manage AI risks, and maintain transparency in our processes. Our development approach aligns with the principles outlined in the Department's guide, ensuring that our AI solutions are designed to enhance teaching and learning while safeguarding user trust and equity.

Informing the Guide

The guide was informed by public listening sessions held in 2023, which included input from developers, industry associations, and non-profit organizations. These sessions highlighted the importance of a shared responsibility in fostering trust, actively managing AI risks, and coordinating innovation with responsibility throughout the development process.

Key Themes from the Guide

  1. Trust as a Shared Responsibility: The guide emphasizes the federal government’s role in ensuring the safe, secure, and trustworthy development of AI, as well as the shared responsibility among developers.
  2. Managing AI Risks: Developers are encouraged to openly discuss how they identify, prioritize, and manage AI risks, alongside showcasing the benefits of their technologies.
  3. Coordinated Responsibility: The Department encourages a “dual stack” approach where development organizations establish a parallel focus on earning trust alongside innovation.

Sections of the Guide

The guide is divided into five sections to support developers:

  1. Designing for Teaching and Learning
  2. Providing Evidence of Rationale and Impact
  3. Advancing Equity and Protecting Civil Rights
  4. Ensuring Safety and Security
  5. Promoting Transparency and Earning Trust
