Embracing adaptability with GHC 2020

Embracing adaptability with GHC 2020

2020 has indeed been a very challenging year for all of us. Today #GHC2020 sent out a mail mentioning that the virtual career fair wouldn't go as planned, which would mean that the open career chat with the recruiters will be cut short to people having pre-scheduled interviews. As the conference is merely 2 days away, this news hasn't been taken well by the attendees. I have been reading a lot of insults and hate messages on LinkedIn regarding the same.

As much as it is disheartening to the job seekers, it is crucial to realize that AnitaB.org isn't deliberating this action. It would have been quite difficult for AnitaB.org to organize #GHC2020 in the middle of the pandemic, getting all the speakers and sessions together. The conference entails speakers like Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe, Marian Croak to name a few. It need not be mentioned how much efforts GHC has been putting in to create a community of women in technology. It is extremely astonishing for me to see the hatred in the words of people for a non-profit organization, which has always been working to motivate and reinforce women in technology.

Criticizing #GHC2020 or AnitaB.org is disheartening to me. I have been a part of various communities who have been working to be a voice in promoting women in science, engineering and technology. I have worked day in day out with them, and have seen the amount of passion and zeal they have to support women.

AnitaB.org has been supporting and uplifting women in the field since 1997. It is astonishing that when they are facing a bit of stretch, people are quick to discredit them.

I would request all attendees to understand the perspective of the Grace Hopper Celebration and appreciate their efforts to organize this amazing meet-up which they have been consistently doing since years. Instead of using LinkedIn and other social media platform to spread negative word about GHC, use it to build connections and find the right resources for yourself. Take this as an experience that teaches you how to adapt to changing situations.

For all those feeling helpless for job search, I would be more than happy to help and guide in my capacity.

In these unusual times, let's not spread negativity, embrace the changes happening in the world and back each other.

Well said Aishwarya Srinivasan! Nothing has prepared us more for unpredictable things than COVID-19. It has shown us that life doesn't always happen as we planned and what you do and how you respond to it is what matters!

Absolutely! In these non-ideal times we should not judge and discredit everything #ghc has done over the years to promote women in tech, which I feel has much more impact on society (bridging the gender based gaps) then just jobs/career.

I agree, one isolated incident should not be used to discredit everything AnitaB.org does and has done for women in technology. If only we could have more discussion about how the situation can be remedied because that is what students like me really need!
