Embracing Accessibility and Authentic Storytelling: Key Takeaways from Together TV's BFI Premiere Q&A

Just yesterday, as part of the London Film Festival at British Film Institute (BFI) , I had the pleasure to run Together TV ’s Diverse Film Fund Premiere 2024. It was a great afternoon, where filmmakers, advocates, and creators came together to discuss the crucial themes of representation, accessibility, and authentic storytelling.

Our Q&A panel was a brilliant mix of voices. We had Jazzy, the vibrant star of Becoming Jazzy Whipps by Director Bim Ajadi ; Solomon Watkins , Director of Real Thick Glasses; and Stefan Pollak , Director of ALT Jay, whose stars Matt and Jay were in the room too. Together TV’s Vice Chair Satmohan Panesar led the discussion like a pro, sparking meaningful dialogue while getting the audience to really connect with these diverse stories.

Accessibility Is Key

One of the biggest themes of the event? Accessibility. It was front and centre, with Stefan Pollak passionately calling for more inclusive public spaces, whether that’s schools, gyms, or everyday environments. Their words were a powerful reminder of how far we still need to go, but also how critical representation is in shaping a more inclusive world.

"Digital accessibility makes everything more enjoyable" Stefan said, pointing out that it's not just about building better spaces: it's about creating communities where people feel seen, heard, and free.

Jazzy’s Journey

Jazzy stole the show with her honesty. She spoke openly about the ups and downs of going viral, especially the emotional rollercoaster that comes with being in the spotlight on social media. For the deaf community, her content is life-changing, giving them representation that’s been sorely lacking. But, as she shared, the darker side of social media can be tough to handle.

"When my videos blew up, and I got millions of views, the trolls came out of nowhere. The negative comments really got to me, and at one point, I started to believe the things they were saying. My mental health took a serious hit" Jazzy shared.

Despite the challenges, Jazzy is determined to stay true to herself and keep making an impact, encouraging everyone to remember that content creators are real people with real stories.

Authentic Storytelling and Representation Matter

The discussion didn’t stop at accessibility; representation in media was another hot topic. The filmmakers all agreed: real, authentic stories can only be told by those who’ve lived them. Solomon shared how important it was to listen to his contributors while making Real Thick Glasses, ensuring the film truly reflected their lived experiences.

"When people with disabilities are telling their own stories, it’s authentic. It resonates, and you can feel the difference," Solomon said. It’s that kind of storytelling that Together TV’s Diverse Film Fund is championing, giving diverse voices the platform they deserve.

Emotional Storytelling Behind the Camera

One of the most touching moments came when Jazzy spoke about working with Bim Ajadi, who helped her express her true self, something she’s rarely done on social media. "I’m always the bubbly, happy version of myself online, but filming this project let me show my real emotions" she said. It was a powerful reminder that social media doesn’t always show the full picture of someone’s life.

The afternoon wrapped up with audience members sharing their own stories and ideas, including one who wanted to take the conversation further by organising accessible events at their gym. The energy in the room was really great.

Together TV’s Diverse Film Fund, thanks to this year's partners Whisper and British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust as they continue to break ground in supporting filmmakers from underrepresented communities, and it was a pleasure to be part of an event that truly embraced inclusion and the power of storytelling.

Personally, I can't wait to keep supporting these filmmakers further and see where their talents will take them. Next step: BAFTAs submissions. Keep your fingers crossed for us!
