Embracing 2021 with Love

How often have you heard – or perhaps even said – “I don’t like Valentine’s Day. It’s a Hallmark holiday. It doesn’t mean anything.”?

While we should of course value our loved ones every day – not just on a holiday – if this last year has taught us anything, it’s that we need to refocus our priorities, learn to pause and enjoy and above all, love, be silly, romantic and sentimental.

That’s why I am choosing to make 2021 the year of love – yes, even during a pandemic. And what better time to start than Valentine’s Day?

When I say “love” by the way: I don’t only mean a romantic relationship. I’m talking about love in a broader sense.

It could be love of…

  •  A pet. Perhaps it’s time to adopt a new furry friend!
  • Anyone who has made a difference in your life. Call up an old neighbor, a grade school teacher or an old friend - and just say thank you.
  • Your body. Stand in front of your mirror naked and exclaim how gorgeous you are!
  • A stranger. Just say hello to anyone and everyone, and look for a smile.
  • A song. My new favorite is “Throw Me a Party” by Rita Wilson.
  • A movie. Re-watch an old favorite. For me, it’s Forest Gump, Inside Out and Remember the Titans.
  • A memory. Pull out an old photo, and relive the moment.
  • A sport or a sports team. Get outside and play, or root for an underdog.
  • Volunteering. Learn more about MATI USA, which is helping small businesses grow and thrive.

If it’s not one of the above, I invite you to fill in your own blank! Let’s go big this year for Valentine’s Day!

While 2020 is over, and 2021 poses its own challenges (as does every year for that matter), instead of approaching it with fear, cynicism or frustration, try entering the year from a place of love, and just see where it gets you. I promise you that you’ll feel the difference.

So here’s to new beginnings – including embracing holidays that we’ve written off in the past.
