Embrace Your Vulnerability for an Authentic Voice

I hope you’re feeling good as you read this. I’ve been through a bit of a tough time recently with tonsillitis and an inflamed throat, but I’m getting better. It’s left me pretty tired, though. Something interesting dawned on me when I was teaching and making videos recently. Even though I was a bit ‘below par’ because of my throat, I thought, “Does it really matter, as long as I’m getting my message across?” This got me thinking about embracing vulnerability.
It’s okay to feel a bit vulnerable sometimes – everyone does. You know, being completely confident all the time might not even be possible. What’s more important is believing in yourself and showing your true self when you talk to others, whether you’re speaking or singing. Sometimes, it’s alright to show your vulnerable side because that can actually be a strength. After all, we’re not robots.
So, based on this, I’ve come up with five simple tips to explain what I mean. I’d love to hear what you think.
1. Make your vulnerability your strength
Even with Imperfections: Let’s start by loving what makes you special, including the little things that might be different about your voice. Instead of trying to be perfect, just let your natural self shine. Those little differences? They’re like your voice’s signature that connects with people in a real way. In this way, your vulnerability becomes your strength. Think of the many famous singers and speakers with less than ‘perfect’ voices who draw us in with their own special vocal qualities.
2. Use your vulnerability to invite people in
Imagine we’re sitting by a cozy fire having a friendly chat. It’s time to open up and talk about your own experiences – the good ones and the not-so-good ones. When you let others see the real you, your voice becomes more than just words. It’s like inviting them into your world. if you’re a singer you need to invite your audience into the world of your song in a similar way.
3. Let your feelings out
Your voice isn’t just for saying or singing words; it’s also for showing how you feel. Whether you’re excited, understanding, or feeling a bit unsure, it’s okay to let those feelings come through. When your real emotions come through in your voice, your message really hits home. Your vulnerability is what makes this possible.

4. Listen and connect
Think about how you listen when someone talks to you. It’s like making them feel safe to share. When you listen carefully, you create a space where people can be themselves. It’s like a special kind of understanding and connection.
5. Talk, listen, grow together
Imagine a place where everyone’s ideas are welcome. You can encourage conversations and feedback. When you make room for open chats, you’re not just talking – you’re building trust and helping each other grow.
Remember, showing your vulnerable side doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re being real and brave. When you bring that honesty into your voice, you’re giving others permission to do the same. So, go ahead and be yourself – that’s how you create stronger connections in every part of life.
I hope you find this helpful.
