"EMBRACE THE SUCK"
I recently read the book, Living with a SEAL, in which Jesse Itzler tells the story of how he hired an Ex-Navy Seal to come live with him in his Manhattan apartment and train him. The Ex-Seal agreed to do so on the condition, Jesse had to do whatever the Seal asked of him.
Jesse found out the hard way about the Navy Seals 40% rule. In a nut shell the 40% rule stands for the proposition that when you think you are mentally and physically ready to "tap out", you are really only at 40% of your actual mental and physical capacity.
You see, after 40% is when things become really uncomfortable and where most people never go. After 40% is where the suck begins, but it’s also where the gold is. It’s at this point where true growth and development begin. So if you can go there and press through, you can grow and develop like never before.
Thus the saying, "Embrace the Suck", or "If it doesn't suck we don't do it" have developed.
The book goes on to show the numerous ways Jesse Itzler broke numerous mental and physical barriers over the course of just one month by learning to embrace the suck.
What are you willing to do?
Can you drive hard through the first 40% of what you are doing until you feel mentally and physically exhausted and then continue?
Pushing beyond the first 40% is hard, but in doing so in everything you do, you can expedite your trip towards excellence physically, mentally, in relationships and otherwise.
And remember when it comes to your growth, training and development, “If it doesn’t suck…don’t do it.
