Embrace Progress Over Perfection and Leave the "All or Nothing" Mentality Behind You


The gyms are getting quiet again as resolutioners hang up their cleats, stop working out, and quit their diets.


It's sad to see. We need to continue to push for a fit, healthy, and happy society, and that starts with a healthy body.


I work with many clients whose past attempts at getting lean and healthy have always been an ALL OR NOTHING approach:

  • HIIT sessions 7 days a week
  • Eating like a rabbit
  • No cheat meals, EVER

And then they break, burn out, and go back to their old unhealthy habits.


THE SHOTGUN APPROACH is a crap strategy; you need to be THE SNIPER by focusing on ONE THING.

We use an excellent tool at M PERFORM with our clients; it's called the LEAD DOMINO.

When it comes to changing your health habits, or any habit for that matter, I'm willing to bet there's ONE THING (your lead domino) that if we just focused on that ONE THING and you got so good at it, you would reach your goals with less effort than expected.

We want to practice this ONE THING you get so good at you can't get it wrong.


The LEAD DOMINO can be broken down into three parts:

  1. Habit Cue
  2. Response
  3. Reward


For context, my LEAD DOMINO looks like this:

  • Habit Cue - reverse alarm at 930pm
  • Response - I stop what I'm doing, brush my teeth, wash my face and crawl into bed.
  • Reward - 8 hours in bed (2 before midnight) so that I feel energized, motivated, and disciplined to do all the other things in my life like write this article, train, eat healthy, and have energy for my people.


If you struggle with fat loss, your LEAD DOMINO could look like this:

  • Habit Cue - alarm goes off at 10am on Sunday (this could be a calendar reminder or an alarm on your phone)
  • Response - go to the grocery store to fill your pre-made grocery list to start meal prep for the week.
  • Reward - hitting your weekly fat loss goal, saving money, having incredible energy, saving time because you're not thinking about what to eat, ALL because you had your meals ready.


Take a second and analyze an area of your like that you want to improve. It could be exercise, nutrition or even putting your phone down.
