From the Desk of Karen Chaston
One of my cherished practices is pausing to reflect on the journey from who I was a year ago to the person I've become today. In a particularly vivid reflection, I found myself transported back to 2013. It was a defining moment in my early days as a life coach and speaker.
Following a 20-minute presentation, a woman from the audience approached me with a piece of advice that initially caught me off guard. I braced myself, expecting criticism, given that I was sure I hadn't used any inappropriate language. However, what she pointed out was something far more profound: my reliance on necessity language, a hallmark of my Baby Boomer upbringing, instead of embracing the realm of possibilities language.
Her insights were a catalyst for my growth. Through her guidance, I embarked on a journey to master both necessity and possibilities language.
This week, we're going to dive into the transformative power of words and how they can shape our realities.
Join us as we delve into insights, reflections and exercises that celebrate the power of words to shape our past, define our present and imagine our future.
Enjoy

Embracing Change: From Necessity to Possibility
Over the course of time, language weaves patterns that reflect our deepest values, struggles and aspirations. For the Baby Boomer generation, born in the aftermath of World War II, necessity language became the thread that stitched together a society focused on rebuilding, stability and collective effort. This generation was raised on the principles of duty, responsibility and the unwavering belief in hard work as the cornerstone of success and societal contribution. The language of necessity—must, have to, need—echoed through the halls of their homes, workplaces and communities, shaping a worldview grounded in determination, resilience and a clear sense of purpose.
Fast forward to the present, and a new linguistic pattern emerges with Millennials and Gen Z at the loom. These younger generations, raised amidst rapid technological advancement, global connectivity and shifting societal norms, speak the language of possibility. Words like can, might and could, open doors to new horizons, encouraging exploration, innovation and a redefinition of what it means to lead a fulfilling life. This shift from necessity to possibility reflects a broader transformation in our approach to challenges, aspirations and interpersonal connections, highlighting a transition from fixed paths to a myriad of potential journeys.
As we navigate this linguistic evolution, we invite readers of all generations to explore the impact of necessity and possibility language on our lives, relationships and the collective tapestry of society.
Necessity Language
Necessity language refers to the use of words and phrases that express obligation, necessity, or compulsion. This type of language is often used to convey rules, laws, duties, or unavoidable circumstances. It includes words like "must," "have to," "need," and phrases that imply a lack of choice or flexibility. Necessity language can:
Possibility Language
Possibility language, on the other hand, focuses on potential, options and choice. It uses words and phrases like "can," "might," "possible," and "able to," suggesting flexibility and openness to different outcomes or paths. Possibility language can:
Applications and Impact
The choice between necessary and possibility language can significantly affect communication outcomes. For instance, in leadership and management, necessary language might be used to enforce compliance with non-negotiable standards or regulations, while possibility language could be employed to inspire team members towards innovative solutions or to engage them in setting their own goals.
In personal development or therapy, possibility language is often used to help individuals see beyond their current limitations, fostering a growth mindset and resilience. Conversely, necessary language can be instrumental in creating habits or routines by establishing clear, non-negotiable actions for success.
Balancing the Two
Effective communication often involves balancing necessary and possibility language, tailoring the mix to the context, objectives and the individuals involved. The key is to use necessary language to establish clear expectations and boundaries while employing possibility language to inspire, motivate and encourage exploration and personal agency.

Duration:
1 week (extendable as needed).
Materials Required:
Instructions:
Preparation: At the beginning of the week, jot down a brief definition of necessity and possibility language for reference. Set a daily reminder to reflect on your language use.
Daily Observation: Throughout the day, pay attention to your conversations, emails, texts and even thoughts. Notice when you use necessity words versus possibility words.
Reflection Time: Allocate 10-15 minutes at the end of each day for reflection.
Did it encourage action?
Was it received positively?
Did it limit thinking?).
Evaluation: At the end of the week, review your entries.
Reflect on the following questions:
Action Plan: Based on your evaluation, set goals for how you want to adjust your language use. For example, if you find that you use necessity language excessively in situations where more flexibility would be beneficial, plan specific ways to incorporate more possibility language. Identify specific situations or conversations where you can consciously practice using the other type of language.
Practice and Adjust: Continue to practice and refine your use of language. Consider repeating the exercise or extending it with a focus on specific goals. Optionally, seek feedback from others about changes they've noticed in your communication style.
In Summary
The transition from a world framed by the rigid confines of 'musts' and 'shoulds' to one illuminated by the potential of 'cans' and 'mights' is not just a linguistic shift but a profound transformation in how we perceive and interact with our world. It's a reminder that the power of our words extends far beyond simple communication; they shape our reality, influence our relationships and chart the course of our personal growth.
Embracing possibility language is more than adopting a new way of speaking; it's about opening your heart and mind to the endless potential that life offers. It's a commitment to viewing each day, challenge and interaction through a lens of potential, rather than limitation. As we move forward, let’s weave a new tapestry of communication that honours the stability and dedication of the past whilst embracing the flexibility, creativity and boundless opportunities of the future.
