The word ‘talent’ is derived from the unit of ancient Roman/Greek currency and used to describe something of value or a gift bestowed on someone. Everyone has an innate potential which we (teachers, educators, mentors, leaders, managers) have a duty to nurture the potential which each individual has. What needs to be done is to convert that potential into a real talent for the individual to use it for the benefit of others and have a positive impact in their lives.
The secret message communicated to most young people today by the society around them is that they are not needed, that the society will run itself quite nicely until they - at some distant point in the future - will take over the reigns. Yet the fact is that the society is not running itself nicely... because the rest of us need all the energy, brains, imagination and talent that young people can bring to bear down on our difficulties. For society to attempt to solve its desperate problems without the full participation of even very young people is imbecile. - Alvin Toffler
We need to go beyond the HR practice of using the word ‘talent’ to describe the ’very best’, but rather use the term to refer to the potential in every employee, especially when you recruit based on an individual’s capability and potential. There is need, therefore, to develop that potential and value the person for who they are and the talent that we can unlock.
This is what leadership is all about: Nurturing talent, inspiring people and helping them achieve their best in pursuit of a common goal. Identifying and nurturing talent in people is one of the key functions of a leader.?A leader needs to deploy people to do things that they are really good at. Thus, a leader needs to understand people and use different approaches to motivate them.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” - Albert Einstein
There is no doubt that every human being possesses at least one natural ability, aptitude or skill that makes them unique and memorable. For example, many people have a talent for various soft skills such as team building, communication, adaptability, negotiation, writing, musical abilities, and artistry, etc. which can be nurtured to help them realize their full potential and become successful.
The propensity to achieve, succeed and thrive in our endeavors can be nurtured, shaped, formed and encouraged. This is the reason some individuals reach the pinnacle of perfection with their skills and talents, while others remain simply mediocre. Thus, talent management may refer to a set of processes, programs, and cultural norms meant to attract, develop, deploy, and retain talent to achieve strategic objectives and meet future business needs of an organization.??
In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
To maximize on your talents, it requires a combination of genetics, home environment, mentoring and coaching. In addition, you may further develop your talents by observing excellent role models with robust skills, and being provided with superlative tutoring and direct instruction. You may also need some luck, chance, fate, and the stars etc. to unleash your greatness. ??
Although Africa is hailed as a major growth market for global businesses, global companies expanding to Africa are having a tough time finding leaders to run their operations because of lack of top schools and lower pay than in other regions. There is need, therefore, to identify and nurture talent in Africa:??
1.?????Identify and nurture talent early
2.?????Cultivate motivation for learning
3.?????Build important habits and skills, through appropriate challenges
4.?????Help children recognize their aptitudes, interests and personality
5.?????Actively consider out-of-school programs and expert mentoring.
Nurturing talent is the key to a successful business because business is only ever as good as the people within it. By nurturing talent within your company, you will likely experience a positive impact on both culture, growth and commercial success because your team will be more engaged, loyal and productive while driving towards your ultimate business goals. This is possible when you create a space to enable young people to develop and grow their professional skillset.
Remind your critics when they say you don't have the expertise or experience to do something that an amateur built the ark and the experts built the Titanic. - Peyton Manning
When trainees become passionate and knowledgeable, they will transfer the same to customers as well. However, many companies can over complicate talent development strategies, and instead of identifying and then nurturing talent, they create a toxic environment with the opposite effect resulting in staff churn. It is important to identify the natural talent in your team before you can nurture and enable them to grow because nurturing talent will be the difference between successful growth and stagnation.
Equally, it is important to keep the lines of communication open, including helping them to professionally progress, improve, hone and develop their natural talents. This leads to engaged employees who are more productive, have more ideas and will help your business to grow. Once you identify the natural strengths of your employees, you will need to engage them in the right field.
Despite a decade of criticism and budget cuts, the specialised UN agencies have far more expertise and hands-on experience than any other organisations in the world. - Jeffrey Sachs
Unfortunately, a 2016 poll by Gallup showed just 13% of employees working for an organization were engaged. This means more companies need to create more nurturing cultures within the workplace. It worth emphasizing that your business will never reach its full potential until you nurture talent and ensure your employees are engaged, motivated and productive. Investing in the talent in your team, therefore, is vital, and by rewarding hard work and commitment, you will be rewarded with loyalty, new ideas and commitment in return.
You can also spot the untapped skills of your team and channel them in the right direction for the business, which in turn will lead to greater fulfilment and job satisfaction for your employees. You will need to know your team and enable each team member to play to their own strengths by offering the appropriate training and opportunities. Once you make them enjoy their work, they will be able to grow with the business, and thus create a stable environment to move forward and grow your business.
I've always been very passionate about investing time in and sharing my expertise with other entrepreneurs. - Sara Davies?
However, despite progress in diversifying the talent pool, the level of representation of Black talent in leadership positions remains astoundingly low. For example, only about four percent of senior leaders at large companies are Black, and only six Black professionals hold CEO positions at Fortune 500 companies. This is contrary to research findings that companies with diverse leadership teams perform better both with talent and financials.
Black professionals are leaving the workplace because of lack of access to mentorship and sponsorship where 33% of Black professionals reported having a hard time finding a mentor who truly understands them. Companies can invest in Black talent by acknowledging and understanding the current state, including setting out to spotlight the importance of Black leadership representation in corporate spaces and beyond. In addition, most companies can adopt permanent remote-working models which increases more opportunities and reduces bias for the already marginalized.
The nation will benefit in the long term if it continues to be open to foreign expertise. This will help the country to establish its business culture and environment faster, based on international best practice. - Hassanal Bolkiah
It is also important to reach out to young talent on professional social media platforms. For example, you can offer to mentor or be a resource for them in their career development. You can also offer some one-on-one assistance by checking their CVs and cover letters, or giving them advice on how to prepare for job interviews. This will go a long way to winning them and their colleagues over. Once you win them over, you will need to work on retaining them by investing time in them; scheduling regular, one-on-one meetings with them; and listening to them.?
Now more than ever, organizations need to have a clearly defined approach to identifying and nurturing key talent. This requires managers who are able to understand their own values and that of the organization to accurately identify key talent to invest organizational resources into. An organization thrives because of top-quality people. As a result, whatever the strategy, action plan or forecast, you need the right talent to carry it out, which you need to acquire it or develop it yourself.
If people are coming into the country to add an extra dimension, to bring skills and expertise with them, we have always been open to that. - Esther McVey?
It is worthwhile to invest in developing talent who are already committed to the culture and values of the organization, which provides them with the foundations to become a future executive, a market-leading professional or a world-class goal scorer. As a leader, you will need to create an environment that facilitates learning and progression, including providing the appropriate level of mentorship and guidance. You will need to expose your talent to other parts of the business and other ways of working.
You can create a healthy culture of competition, including incentives and encouragement, which can enhance their work ethic and in turn speed up their learning process. You can also offer internship programmes leading to an array of positions within the firm, whilst enabling them to access senior management on a one-to-one basis to help them learn and develop. Therefore, devoting time and resource to young talent is always a worthwhile investment.
Every day, we get a little bit closer to the kind of expertise and the kind of experience we're going to need to go there. I'd love to be the guy walking on Mars. - John L. Phillips
Organization culture begins with the leadership, and caring for people should be at the very heart of leadership. Interestingly, over 70% of US?employees are disengaged, according to Gallup, costing businesses up to $550 billion in lost productivity annually. The lesson is clear: No organization can pursue excellence if its employees are not adequately motivated. So, your role as a leader?is to understand people, identify talent in them, and motivate them! It is important, therefore, to nurture talent as a leader for the benefit of your organization and the employee.
“Take care of your employees and they’ll take care of your business.” --Richard Branson
It is your responsibility to nurture and engage your talent in order to retain them. Stick to realistic and achievable parts, with precise timeframe. The crown or the ultimate goal of that plan should definitely be progress of talent (professional, intellectual, hierarchical and emotional) because the progress of talent is the progress of company. This requires motivation and feedback. You can motivate with commendation, recognizing effort, and with constructive critics; proper focusing; creating atmosphere of success and winners; and understanding problems and giving a hand and support.
You will also need to provide feedback: tell what he/she did well; tell him/her your expectations so as to fulfill it. It is important to recognize your talents, and invest your time, knowledge and energy into their development. It’s worth it. This will lead to your success as well as emotional satisfaction for encouraging someone to give its best.
How To Nurture Talent Within Your Business
“A really great talent finds its happiness in execution.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe?

Automation can ease these burdens somewhat. These technologies can assume many of the admin tasks a worker needs to do.?Furthermore, this technology can greatly improve job satisfaction levels.

That way, all parties can partake proactively.
5.?????Offer Flexibility: Nurturing talent can’t be done under overly rigid work practices. Employees need to grow both personally and professionally and to do so effectively, they need a level of control. You can cater to these types of needs by offering flexibility. Offering flexibility is a great way to encourage worker’s independence as well. They may prefer to work without someone looking over their shoulder, which is good. Employees can test their own limits, recognize their own resourcefulness, and ask for help remotely should they need it.
6.?????Keep Innovating: Your business needs to aspire to be greater constantly. Only then can you expect your workers to adopt a similar attitude. Irrespective of your circumstances or the economic conditions you’re facing, your company must keep pushing to innovate and excel within its industry. Even during tough times, a brave face and stoic leadership are still required.

5 Steps to Nurture Talents and Mastery at Work
1. Identify talents: The first step, and an important one, is to identify?every?team member’s core talent.
2. Unlimited training: Next step, let employees choose for themselves which training programs or conferences they wish to attend.
3. Self-selected mentors: Encourage employees to choose a mentor.
4. Job crafting by combining roles: A more advanced step? Allow employees to craft their own jobs by choosing and combining different roles.
5. Internal project marketplace: The most rebellious step is to establish a so-called ‘internal project marketplace’. In this approach, every task within a company becomes a project, even tasks that are fairly common.
Then, employees are invited to participate in, or contribute to, one or more projects of their choosing. Employees can take on as many projects as they want—based on their interests. No one should be assigned a project. This allows staff themselves to determine how they can best contribute to the company. Similar to less appealing roles, less appealing projects are often not important enough to do. They may be eliminated entirely, new people may be hired to execute them, or, if absolutely necessary, they can be outsourced.
The importance of Talent Management
Talent management is a constant process that involves attracting and retaining high-quality employees, developing their skills, and continuously motivating them to improve their performance. Talent management is effective (or even very effective) at attracting and retaining talent as well as improving overall performance.
1. It helps businesses improve performance: With top specialists in your organization, you can reach any goal.
2. It allows companies to stay competitive: By hiring and developing talented employees, your organization becomes stronger and better prepared to face changes and risks.
3. It drives innovation: Talented employees are able to find ways to harness the capabilities of new tools and solve problems or come up with original ideas.
4. It helps form productive teams: The appropriate talent management strategy will allow you to form a more productive team.
5. It decreases turnover: When employees feel valued at a company, when they know they will have plenty of opportunities to grow in the business, they are less likely to seek work elsewhere.
6. It leads to strong employer branding: Talent management brands your company as an employer. This helps you to attract the best candidates for future hires.
7. It motivates others to grow: Having inspiring talent on your team will motivate other employees and help them grow.
Talent Management Model
Whereas there is no standardized model for talent management, some HR professionals have proposed excellent models that any company can use. However you choose to develop your model, it must include the following.
1. Planning: Planning aligns your talent management model in line with the overall goals of your organization.
2. Attracting: The right strategy will attract just the kind of workers you want at your business. Such hires will be driven, skilled, and seeking to advance within the company.
3. Developing: The development part of the model involves taking steps to help talent grow within the company.
4. Retaining: Another purpose of talent management is to keep people at your company for longer. Employees need to continue feeling that the company is an enjoyable, meaningful place to work. Through training and other types of engagement, employees have the chance to create a career without leaving the company. You may achieve this by focusing on compensation (monetary and otherwise) as well as company culture.
5. Transitioning: After hiring and developing their skills, you need to plan for employees’ transitions. You need to have a plan in place to promote employees or move them to another role, department, or office. If a worker does decide to leave, you need to know why.
Talent Management Strategy
A talent management strategy is based on the talent management model. It should match your organization’s goals and clearly define what type of talent you need. You organize the talent management process based on the talent management strategy.
There are few different types strategies you can choose from.
1.?????Strategy #1: Hire Only Top Employees
The advantages of this strategy are obvious:
·???????You immediately receive top talent.
·???????The employees will perform well and probably reach high performance faster.
·???????You are able to grow your company faster.
·???????You are more prepared for challenges and risks.
However, there are some disadvantages:
·???????It’s expensive, and will cost you even more if you end up needing to hire someone else.
·???????It could be more difficult to retain top talent.
·???????The hiring process may take longer, as you’ll probably want to select from a wider pool of candidates.
·???????It can be challenging to manage team of top talent.
·???????Having too many top performers on a team can lead to competition and result in underperformance.

2.?????Strategy #2: Hire Promising Specialists and Develop Them
This second option has a couple advantages:
·???????You can find talent faster. This may be necessary if you are in urgent need for talent and have insufficient time to search for top employees.
·???????You will likely save money on salaries.
·???????The employee has the potential to become a skilled and loyal professional.
·???????You can hire two, or even three, promising specialists for the same amount as for one top performer.
The main disadvantages are:
·???????Your company may grow slower.
·???????Compared to top talent, these hires lack of knowledge. This can lead to lower performance.
·???????You may need to hire another specialist if the employee cannot handle the role.
·???????It requires a larger investment in development.
·???????The strategy may fail entirely and you’ll need to revert to option 1.
3.?????Strategy #3: Combine Strategies 1 and 2
This quote describes the strategy best: “Your team’s strength is not a function of the talent of individual members. It’s a function of their collaboration, tenacity, and mutual respect.”
Finally, the pros of combining the two above are:
·???????It gives you the best of both worlds.
·???????It also allows you to take advantage of a combination of new hires and existing talent.
·???????Having top talent and potentially good specialists (e.g., young employees) will help the specialists grow faster and motivate them.
·???????It leads to knowledge transfer — top talent can teach other employees.
All the same, there is one con:
·???????If you have specific requirements (such as you are in urgent need of growth or if you are on a tight budget), sticking to a single strategy may be more appropriate.
Building Your Talent Management Strategy
Lastly, before you go ahead and launch your recruitment and talent management strategy, make sure you include the essential components of a talent management strategy.
1. Know What Is Your Talent Management Strategy Is For
2. Measure the Results
3. Assign Responsibilities
4. Communicate with Employees
The Talent Management Process
The?talent management process?is how you organize the management of your human resources. It is how you choose employees, how you hire them, and how (or if) you train them, motivate them, fire them, and so on. The 7 Steps of a Great Talent Management Process:
Step 1: Specify What Skills You Need
Step 2: Attract the Right People
Step 3: Onboard and Organize Work
Step 4: Organize Learning and Development
Step 5: Hold Performance Appraisals
Step 6: Strategize to Retain Your Best Talent
Step 7: Plan for Successions
Talent Development
Talent development within an organization is a process by which an individual’s innate capabilities are identified and nurtured. In other words, talent development is the stage before professional skills development. First, a person’s natural talents must be understood, and only then can their related skills be fostered through a talent development program.?
Why is talent development important?
The many?benefits of talent development?are felt by employees and employers alike. These include:
1. Improved performance
2. Happy employees
3. Landing new talent
4. Fewer skill gaps
5. Prepared for the future
6. Better compliance
What are talent development professionals?
Talent development professionals (also called talent developers) oversee an organization’s talent development strategy. They are in charge of cultivating employees’ skills in a way that promotes the organization’s values and goals, with a special focus on retaining the top talent. They often work closely together with the HR department in recruitment efforts. Talent developers typically have superb communication, leadership, and people skills.
Talent development professionals identify and address skill gaps to meet organizational goals. They evaluate employee performance and assess skill levels, and based on their analysis, draw up company-wide training and reskilling programs, seminars, and other plans to fill skill gaps and meet business aims. At the same time, they strive to align with each employee’s goals and aspirations, to ensure that these efforts are as successful and effective as possible.
To be effective, talent development efforts require three basic characteristics:
Involvement of Management: Talent development must be a comprehensive process that occurs at all levels of a company.
Proper Setting: The most common medium for talent development is a group setting such as a forum, course, workshop, or seminar.
Flexibility: Once underway, a talent development program requires assessment and adaptation.
What is the difference between talent development and talent management?
Talent development is focused on just that: developing, motivating, and retaining employees. This is done through personalized learning and growth plans, to not only boost professional performance, but also employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention. Talent development utilizes on-the-job learning opportunities, such as job shadowing and taking on new responsibilities, with the goal of helping employees advance in their career paths.?
Talent management, on the other hand, is a higher-level organizational strategy for recruiting top talent. Talent management always has an eye on succession planning and the bigger picture; the aim is to build a “talent pipeline” so the company can find and retain strategic talent to meet their long-term goals. One of the ways this is done is through reskilling and upskilling.
