Embrace the new normal

Agriculture is known to be the backbone of the South African economy. As such, after a long battle to endure drought, the industry has been called upon to bring some level of certainty in the midst of Covid-19. A big ask to the industry on recovery, but a burden we must bear.
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (DAFF) and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) have taken a stern move to assist small-scale and subsistence farmers with expected harvest/s within the next six months. A needed short term assistance to take a bit of the pressure off of this vulnerable group of food producers. However, a long term strategy is needed as a matter of urgency, based on the fact that the duration of this turmoil is unknown and the extent of its damage is unpredictable.
From this point onwards, whether we like it or not, it is no longer business as usual for farmers. This time warrants the utmost discipline and innovation from all stakeholders (fortunately, every single living individual is) of the agricultural value chain. Thus, we are all charged with the duty to produce, handle, distribute and consume responsibly. Food losses must be at a bare minimum, and agro-processing must play a significant role in this regard.
Some level of stability may be realized after a cure and/ or vaccine has been successfully manufactured, but things may never go back to what they used to be. For now, this is our reality, this is our new normal we must embrace it and adapt. I have no doubt in my mind that working together we will emerge victoriously.
