As the day winds down, I find solace in self-reflection. ??♂? It's like a form of meditation for me, a practice that should be part of our weekly routine to detoxify our minds from the stresses of work and life. Despite the advice to keep work and personal life separate, especially for those of us in fast-moving disciplines and dynamic fields like environmental sustainability research and entrepreneurship. In these domains, characterized by rapid innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, the line between professional and personal endeavors tends to blend, fueled by aspirations and driven by the need for impactful change.
During moments of self-reflection, we may find ourselves delving deep into our thoughts, contemplating our very existence and the journey we've embarked upon, both personally and professionally. Sometimes, the lines between personal and professional life blur, particularly for those of us who tread unconventional paths or pursue less-traveled roads.
As the renowned actor Brad Pitt once said, "In the end, it was neither the journey nor the destination but the company of the right people that mattered the most". Similarly, from the life of Buddha, we learn that what truly matters are three things: how much we loved, how gently we lived, and how gracefully we let go of things not meant for us - whether in our professional or personal lives. The art of letting go, as beautifully articulated in the HBS article "The Art of Letting Go" by Tony Schwartz, is a skill that requires practice and self-awareness.
For most of my life, I prided myself on relentless perseverance and refusal to give up on any goal. Letting go felt like failure or rejection, but I've come to realize that it often leads to unforeseen growth and opportunities. Pushing too hard can drain our energy and lead to burnout, as highlighted in the Harvard Business Review article "Your Burnout Is Trying to Tell You Something" by Kandi Wiens. Recognizing the unique workplace conditions contributing to our stress is crucial for recovery.
Sometimes, it's not a single factor but a culmination of experiences stored in our subconscious that leads to burnout. "Meditation is food for the soul." ?? Spiritual seeking and meditation have helped me find emotional resilience amidst chaos.
Taking calculated risks and expressing dissent when necessary are essential for personal growth and integrity. As we navigate life's complexities, it's important to remember that inner happiness should never be compromised for external validation. Some decisions and risks are worth taking to break free from the shackles of guilt and regret.
In the end, what truly matters is staying true to ourselves, nurturing our inner happiness, and embracing the journey with grace and resilience.
