Embrace the Future of Work

Embrace the Future of Work

The future of work has arrived, and it sounds like something out of your best sci-fi fantasy. It comes replete with the chance to transform yourself into an avatar and attend a remote work meeting dressed like a dragon. Artificial intelligence (AI) can help you write a memo, plan a budget, and find new employees through people analytics. Advanced technology means you could feasibly work from anywhere at any time - and so can your clients and colleagues. In fact, this remote-enabling technology brings us closer to people in distant lands.?

Yet, we all feel a little further away than we used to. Many of us are not socializing with our clients or colleagues in the way we once did. Do you have a friend from work? There's some distance between leadership and employees, despite an emphasis on more transparency and one-on-one meetings. We're missing those water cooler moments that could spark genius. We don't see our teammates' desks with the photos of the kids and spouse, so it's hard to think of them as anything more than their job title.?

Many feel overworked, overstressed, underpaid, and underappreciated. We find ourselves amid this future of work with low morale and uncertainty. Some of us are wondering if those advanced technologies that make us more efficient will replace us entirely. Then, what will our future be????

So, those who are leading us in this future of work must have characteristics that were not always associated with executives. Empathy, kindness, and transparency are paramount for success in this new world. In addition, Human Resources leaders must think creatively about how to help employees balance work and life, avoid burnout, and ease the stress that comes with the robots-are-coming mentality.?

I'm afraid of the robots coming after my job. But I think humans will prevail by continuously learning and adapting to the new norms, expectations, and technology they encounter at work. What do you think?
