Embrace the Future: Examine the Connecting Dots of the Past
As Steve Jobs said:
“You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.
You have to trust in something -- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
January 2019 represents change for the future for many of us. For me personally it is the start of a new position with a new firm which brings new challenges, new tools to use, new questions to ask, new relationships to grow and new ideas to execute. As exciting as this is I have only worked for 4 companies since I graduated from college in 1991. Each one of these companies gave me an exciting opportunity to learn, engage, grow, but most importantly do something that allowed me to emotionally connect with clients and colleagues. Tapping into this emotional connection and making this a reality is not easy. The emotional connection is what fuels the passion which sparks the courage and conviction to take action and influence others. This process to examine the present and the past can be elusive because we seldom take time for the self-care required to ask these questions of ourselves. Our work culture has been more about chasing targets, and about protecting ego rather than believing we really can help solve complex problems or the desired experience that has the power to transform.
I decided to ask the question, what things am I passionate about, what is my purpose, and what are the best relationships over my 28 year professional career? After examination I realized that I enjoy solving the problems of today with the tools that most people haven’t learned about yet. I want to create new relationships in a community that has the same passion. I enjoy teaching others that the power of identifying your passion will create the courage to try things others haven't. I also found that making a meaningful difference helping others achieve outcomes that people didn’t think was possible is the most rewarding.
We are living in the information age where new digital technologies will solve the world's most complex problems. The courage and curiosity to embrace it will define the future. This is why I have chosen to recently join EVOTEK and am super excited. I am not sure what the future looks like but if the decision for change is rooted with real purpose then this approach to examine the connecting dots of the past and communicate with your gut should make all the difference.
