Dear Entrepreneurs (And employees),
I spent the past 2 days at the Future of Sustainability conference in partnership with Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) . The conversations were mind-blowing, and the whole time, I kept thinking, "How do I filter these conversations down to SMEs and entrepreneurs?" Well, in the dynamic landscape of business we're living in, where change is constant and innovation is key, you need to know that there's a crucial element that's becoming increasingly vital: sustainability. Sustainability goes beyond profits.
As you navigate the entrepreneurial journey, it's imperative to recognise the significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in shaping the future of doing business. Let's start with why ESG matters: Well, this "concept" encompasses a spectrum of factors that evaluate a company's societal impact and sustainability efforts. Importantly, embracing ESG principles not only aligns your business with ethical practices but also fosters long-term success and resilience. It's said that companies that prioritise ESG are better equipped to mitigate risks, attract investors, and enhance brand reputation. This matters for SMEs as you need to take these into account when you're looking at supplying to corporations. You know the drill, their strategic focuses and measures often filter down to their supply chain.
Environmental Sustainability: The health of our planet is intrinsically linked to the success of businesses. Entrepreneurs have the power to minimise environmental harm through sustainable practices such as reducing carbon emissions, conserving resources, and adopting renewable energy sources. By incorporating eco-friendly initiatives into your business model, you not only contribute to a healthier planet but also gain a competitive edge in an increasingly eco-conscious market. It sounds daunting, but honestly, every bit counts.
Social Responsibility: Businesses play a pivotal role in shaping societal norms and addressing pressing social issues. Embracing social responsibility involves promoting diversity and inclusion, ensuring fair labour practices, and giving back to the community. I can hear entrepreneurs saying: "I'm just trying to survive - I'm not trying to attract additional responsibilities for the business." Well, on this one, it starts with your survival and growth- growth means you employ one or more people, and you've already started with inclusion. By employing women and youth - you're promoting diversity. You therefore don't need to go out and look for social responsibility initiatives to do, they start internally.
Governance Excellence: Sound governance practices form the bedrock of a successful and sustainable business. You have to establish transparent business processes, maintain ethical standards, and prioritise stakeholder engagement, which are essential components of effective governance. In line with ethical principles, by upholding principles of accountability and integrity, entrepreneurs can earn the trust of investors, regulators, and consumers, laying the foundation for long-term growth and stability.
