Embrace the Challenge
Professional courage, with its element of uncertainty, presents an intriguing construct. At its essence is the willingness to execute informed decisions and demonstrate boldness, even when confronted with potential risks or uncertainties. Professional courage entails a readiness to explore new and unfamiliar territories, necessitating practitioners to venture beyond their comfort zones. Acquiring such courage involves a deliberate cultivation of resilience, self-awareness, and a commitment to growth. Ultimately, professional courage embodies an intentional mindset.
With this in mind, twelve months ago I initiated the publication of my monthly newsletter, "Courageous Conversations." This was a deliberate endeavour aimed to stretch my professional thinking, insight and knowledge; and in some small and modest way, enrich my professional contributions to the wider international world. With this came my hope that through my small demonstration of professional courage, it might inspire others to do so in their own unique way. After all, professional courage is contagious.?
As I reflected on my Courageous Conversations anniversary, I wondered how my public pursuit of professional courage fared? Given all the uncertainties, potential risks, and possible associated consequences with professional courage, it's understandable why there might be some apprehensive feelings.?
Currently, I have 662 subscribers with the number of reads per newsletters ranging between 500-940. This was unexpected, and I thank each and everyone one of my subscribers and readers. However, it is important to highlight that throughout this initiative, the professional support, encouragement, and collegiality from practitioners worldwide that I have received has been phenomenal. Professional relationships (both in person and online) facilitate the exchange of knowledge, insights, and best practices, enabling practitioners to stay informed, collaborative, innovative, and competitive in their field. Irrespective of the subscriber or read count, the true benefit lies in the professional relationships and collaborations established through Courageous Conversations. In this context, my professional courage has certainly been rewarding.
Professional courage requires practitioners to embrace vulnerability and uncertainty. This is not an easy or simplistic task, however, professional courage can be powerful, inspiring and positively influential. Cultivating an intentional mindset and skills in professional courage is essential to career growth, happiness and job satisfaction. It drives career success by building resilience, challenging perspectives, overcoming fears and hesitations, and motivates practitioners to continuously improve and enhance their practice.?
