Embrace the bike, and make London Greener and healthier!
Around 80 London borough cycle officers and transport planners tuned into the e-conference ‘Embracing the Bike: building a greener and healthier recovery for London’. The event aimed to connect local cycle officers and planners with Dutch and British experts to help London Councils rapidly deliver long-lasting quality cycling infrastructure - inspired by the Netherlands. For this event, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the UK teamed up with London Cycling Campaign (LCC), with whom we started a successful ‘Love London, Go Dutch’ cooperation back in 2012 that led to London’s first cycle strategy.
An inspirational keynote by London’s Cycling and Walking Commissioner Will Norman highlighted the great progress being made on cycle infrastructure, and the challenges faced. moderator Ashok Sinha, London Cycling Campaign’s CEO, introduced the workshops. Topics discussed included emergency consultations; Temporary Plus; Low Traffic Neighbourhoods; cycling and the high street; and how to support communities to discover new infrastructure. The sessions were led by LCC’s specialists joined by British and Dutch experts from the Dutch Cycling Embassy, Witteveen+Bos, Royal HaskoningDHV, Decisio, Humankind and Mobycon.
One attendee commented: “While it's nice to be at the 'cutting edge' of making change for active travel, it's so reassuring to have so much expertise from NL and from LCC on tap to help!”
