Embodied Carbon Services

IMEG is now offering engineering services for embodied carbon assessments. We can provide assistance with an Embodied Carbon Study, a Structural Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and a Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (WBLCA).

Embodied Carbon Study

This is a study we can complete in the early stages of a project (conceptual and schematic design phases) to really target embodied carbon reductions from the get-go. This would be ideal for a client who has embodied carbon reductions as a high priority (if this is the case, the structural engineer should be part of the conversation from the start of the project) and who wants the best chance at achieving the highest reductions.

Structural Life Cycle Assessment

This is a life cycle assessment that mirrors what is required by LEED for a Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment, but considers the structure only. Ideally, this will start in the Design Development phase and go through the Construction Phase, with completion of the LCA occurring near the end of the Construction Phase or early into C.A. This is the right choice for a project that had decided on its main building materials and wants no compromise on fa?ade materials, but still works to get the best reductions in embodied carbon as possible.?

Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment

This is a life cycle assessment that follows the LEED guidelines for a Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment, meaning it considers both the structure and the enclosure. This is the analysis that will attain points in LEED v4 or v4.1, and gives the most holistic understanding of the proposed project’s greenhouse gas emissions. It provides an opportunity to reduce emissions in both structural and architectural elements. This is always worth bringing up in the context of embodied carbon goals and LEED discussions on projects.

Let IMEG Help You

If you would like to consider the impacts of embodied carbon on your project and study ways to reduce it, Laura Hagan ([email protected]) at IMEG can provide you with the required tools to make those assessments and shape your project goals to reduce embodied carbon.
