Embedding sustainability and driving change together

Lucy Klinkenberg-Matthews

Hi everyone,?

Welcome to the latest issue of Paragon Connect. This is the first time I’ve edited our newsletter since it expanded from a pure ESG focus to cover the whole world of Paragon. But the topic of sustainability is never far away in our business, so as we approach the end of the year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of the exciting projects and events I’ve been involved in recently - both within my role at Paragon and beyond. These experiences have been inspiring, challenging and rewarding, and they continue to shape my work in embedding sustainability into our business.?

Guest Lecture at Cranfield School of Management

I had the privilege of delivering a one-hour lecture at Cranfield School of Management as part of the sustainability module for their MBA programme. The focus was on integrating sustainability into organisational strategy, covering critical areas such as:?

  • Transitioning from operating in “stealth mode” to leveraging data, risk, and opportunities for driving strategic decision-making.?

  • Securing board approval and fostering a cultural shift towards sustainable practices.?

  • Aligning carbon reporting with financial accounting frameworks.?

  • Emphasising industry collaboration through initiatives like SMP and Print Green.?

It was great to connect again with Dr Rosina Watson , Associate Professor of Sustainability at Cranfield, and to speak to their students on such an important subject.?

The Power of Print?

I attended the Power of Print event, where the keynote speaker, Jonathon Porritt , delivered a powerful message. He emphasised that meaningful government action on climate change is likely to come only when the financial implications become unavoidable. Industries like banking and investment, alongside insurance, are already feeling the heat. His insights underscored the immense societal and financial risks of inaction, reinforcing the urgency for collective measures.?

Aviva Supplier Carbon Net Zero Summit?

The Aviva Supplier Carbon Net Zero Summit was another standout event, bringing together thought leaders and practitioners to discuss progress and challenges in achieving net zero. Some of the takeaways from the event included:?

  • UK Mail shared updates on their efforts in adopting emerging technologies in transport.?

  • Aviva detailed its work in measuring Scope 3 emissions and engaging suppliers to set meaningful targets.?

  • Aviva also showcased their plans and approach for carbon offsetting and carbon removal, and how they are investing in projects (such as UK rainforests) that are long-term and will not deliver carbon removal for many years.?

  • Keynote speaker Deborah Meaden provided thought-provoking insights, advocating for businesses to embed purpose in their operations and move beyond “Net Zero” to focus on ecosystem regeneration. Her perspective on aligning pay structures with sustainability outcomes was particularly inspiring.?

Carbon Disclosure Project Submission?

In October, we completed our CDP submission, a vital step in showcasing our progress on climate-related transparency. The results are expected early next year, and we look forward to using these insights to further refine our sustainability strategies and help our clients reduce their carbon footprint.?

Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)?

This year, we also committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and we have until June 2025 to submit our targets for validation. Preparing for this complex but essential process will be a major focus for the ESG team as we work with carbon net zero consultants to ensure robust, science-backed goals for Paragon.?

Looking Ahead?

Finally, I’m excited to share our 2024 ESG Report, which highlights our achievements and ongoing commitments.

I’ll be back in 2025 to delve deeper into these results and share updates on our sustainability ambitions, so please look out for that!?

As I reflect on the past few months, it’s clear that meaningful progress requires collaboration, bold actions, and a shared vision. I’m inspired by the momentum we’ve built and look forward to continuing this vital work in the months and years ahead.?

Thank you for being part of this journey with us.?
