Embedding innovation into your company DNA with Raj Subramaniam of FedEx – Episode 25 of “Chambers Talks: A Podcast Series with John Chambers”

Next #ChambersTalks #podcast episode out now, featuring FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam. Raj knows better than anyone that while the list of factors critical to business success will vary according to industry, competitive landscape, goals, and more, it’s crucial for companies to build and maintain a capacity to innovate. Companies that adapt their business models to prioritize disruption will thrive. Those that do not will die. As the Digital Age continues to usher in wave after wave of disruptive technologies, businesses will be asked to demonstrate greater operational agility than ever before.?

Raj and I talked about how FedEx’s mission to continuously innovate has long been embedded in their DNA. For instance, the concept of online tracking and tracing in real-time were first introduced by FedEx, which quickly became the standard in shipping. Another great example of FedEx’s ability to lead the pack was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. FedEx’s revolutionary supply chains, complete with industry-leading technology investments in AI and machine learning, enabled the delivery of millions upon millions of vaccines. Today, the company is looking to continue leading market transitions with integrated physical and digital networks.

While Raj has certainly been focused on pushing FedEx’s technological boundaries, he is equally as committed to keeping the company’s world-class culture rooted in their People-Service-Profit or P-S-P philosophy. Introduced by Raj’s predecessor and FedEx Founder, Fred Smith, P-S-P holds that engaged employees provide great service to customers, who will in turn generate business success for the company that can be reinvested back in its people. It’s an idea that remains central to Raj’s vision for the future of FedEx.

Listen for more, including how Raj believes we can use tech for good, the importance of leveraging partnerships, and why stories behind the data are just as important as the data itself. If you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, leave “Chambers Talks: A Podcast Series with John Chambers” a 5-star review – and don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss any future episodes!

Rich content in a short podcast. Great program John and Raj!! P-S-P in that order- and with the imbedded values that drive it- are the secret sauces. Everything else follows from there. FedEx (in my opinion) is a exemplar of a conscious capitalist company (aka stakeholder capitalist company) in all the best senses. Keeping these all in mind as FedEx transitions to its future info and system form is the leadership and cultural challenge of the time. I am betting on you all. Best wishes FedEx!

Always enjoy hearing from Mr. Chambers. The challenge for FedEx is to deliver the originally promised goals with the TNT acquisition in the international logistics space. Those goals and objectives have not been realized in many aspects at this point. The integration and cost savings promised amongst the FedEx international transportation networks has not materialized. FedEx continues to face issues with segment cannibalization with Ground vs. Express. FedEx Ground and cheaper slower shipping alternatives (ecommerce free shipping) continue to cannibalize the FedEx Express business. This has been a challenge since FedEx Corp formed FedEx Ground by acquiring RPS, Roadway Package System. Another major challenge that UPS has mastered is more collaboration between ground and air transport. FedEx continues to separate the Ground and Express operational networks due to union avoidance, they take questionable advantage of some archaic laws related to the Railway Labor Act. A lot of talk about FedEx technology in this session. They are held back by long standing management at the senior levels (CIO and SVP) and not much new ideation from outside hires or sources. A lot of nepotism and resistance to outside influence. #FedEx #UPS
