Embedded LEDs for simple verification

For this feature, we got the design team to put themselves in the shoes of an offshore technician, tasked with validating the bolt load of large diameter tower flanges. Existing tools for measuring bolt load are slow, heavy and prone to human error.

So the challenge was set - accurate bolt load measurements with no tools.

The solution:

InterBolt embeds super bright LED indicators to represent the bolt load.

-????????? Flashing red – the bolt load is too low.

-????????? Green – the bolt load is in the target load window

-????????? Flashing red/green – the bolt load is too high

A technician needs to wake the InterBolt up using a magnet and then the LED stays active for 10 minutes. During this time, technicians can quickly validate the bolt load with the LEDs visible from over 10 metres away.

How do we compare:

InterBolt is the only embedded bolt load sensor with an embedded LED.

Ultimately the design team failed this challenge because a technician still needs to carry a 100g magnet (shown below) to wake up the bolts, but overall a significant step up from the tools currently in use today.
