From June 21 to July 30, my world was a whirlwind of growth, learning, and cultural exchange as I had the incredible privilege of participating in the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders ( YALI Network ). This transformative experience encompassed a dynamic blend of coursework, leadership training, mentorship, networking, professional opportunities, and local community engagement, leaving an indelible mark on my leadership journey.
As one of the fortunate 700 leaders representing 49 diverse countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, I had the privilege of honing my leadership skills and forging meaningful connections with U.S. professionals. Hosted by the esteemed Wayne State University with funding from the 美国国务院 's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the program spanned six invigorating weeks.
Touching down at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on June 21, 2023, I was greeted by the spirited camaraderie of fellow participants Leslee Way , Chukwuemeka Uzoho , and Rabi Sufi and the warm hospitality of Roberto Miranda at the airport. Our journey continued as we were welcomed by an enthusiastic team including Lydia, Catherine (Katie) Franklin , Ella, Jessica Hoffmeyer , Fareed Y. Shalhout , Brady Baybeck , Zane Harvey , Coco, and Jennifer Hart at the Anthony Wayne Drive apartment.
Orientation day was a captivating whirlwind of moments as we navigated the vibrant campus of 美国韦恩州立大学 , setting the stage for the adventure that lay ahead.
Throughout the Fellowship, I had the privilege of engaging in a series of enriching experiences, including the Commemorative Freedom Walk and Rally, a stirring tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., that reminded us of the importance of unity and progress.
From exclusive tours of the historic landmarks that define Detroit's identity to engaging visits to institutions like the Federal Reserve Bank, Focus: HOPE, Saugatuck Dunes State Park, and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, my understanding of this vibrant city deepened with each step.
While immersing myself in the Fellowship, I embraced the chance to learn about a wide array of topics, ranging from Vulnerability and Leadership to U.S. Government Structure and Function, from U.S. Foreign Policy in Relation to Africa to Healthcare in the United States, and so much more. These insightful sessions transformed not only my perspective on leadership but also my role in fostering positive change.
