Embarking on a new journey

Embarking on a new journey

For those of you reading this who have known or followed me for any period of time, you know that #mentalhealth is my passion purpose.

Stemming from my own challenges, which over the past several decades have included depression, anxiety, and PTSD, I have felt a burden on my heart to help those who, like me, were struggling with few places to turn for help, seemingly traveling a never-ending road of despair.

My healing pathway has been complicated, and while I am in a far better place than I have ever been, good mental health is a journey, not a destination.

While I credit a significant portion of my healing to psychedelic-assisted therapy, which provided me with decades of highly effective therapy over the course of just a few hours, the real source of my continued healing and growth has been my faith.

I was born Jewish but the struggles of life and a shaky relationship with God eroded what little spiritual foundation I was standing on, and so I slipped first into agnosticism, and then eventually atheism. Then one day, about ten years ago, God put several people in my life (if you're reading this you know who you are) who helped me find and live a better way. At my lowest, most broken point, God told me that He loved me, He wanted to save me, and introduced me to His son, Jesus Christ.

I recently preached on this at my church, Low Country Community Church, so if you're interested, feel free to watch the on-demand sermon here. (If you're struggling to understand God's plan for you, you might really find the message valuable!)

The peace I have found with my faith has provided a level of comfort I hope everyone reading this has or will experience, as it is like no treatment, no friendship, nor any relationship I've ever experienced.

As my spiritual and healing journey morphed into one, the pains of my life were replaced by the pains of the world; feeling every heartbreak, injustice, and suffering as if it were my own. This, I've come to learn, is the price you pay for having a strong relationship with God, but it is a price worth paying.

Over the past several years, I've had the glorious opportunity to lean more heavily into the mental health and wellness ecosystem, working on conferences both big and small that have aimed to create greater access to safe and affordable mental health treatments. From Psychedelic Science 2023 to our summits in Kentucky and, most recently, Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, where we focused on breakthrough treatments for addiction, the more I leaned into this world of healing, the more I felt there was a bigger calling for me.

One day in early January of this year, I felt that calling grow and turned to the Lord in prayer more frequently and deeply than ever before.

I kept asking, "What am I to do?"

Then one day, I heard Him answer, loud and clear.

The need for help is so great in my home community, and the resources are so few. It's time to perform ministry at home and help your brothers and sisters who are your neighbors and friends. It's time to help relieve their suffering so they can live a life in peace.

So that's what I've decided to do.

I am in the process of launching a faith-based, non-profit mental health treatment center in my community of Horry County, South Carolina. With a rapidly expanding population that has almost doubled over the past ten years, we are facing an unfortunate, all too-common struggle: too much demand for effective mental health treatment and not enough resources.

Our therapist and psychiatrist infrastructure is strained, and the options beyond medication are limited.

Since moving here in 2020, my family and I have been deeply touched by the community's love and support, and this, combined with my deep-seated passion for mental health, has driven me to bring some of the most advanced mental health treatments to the Grand Strand through my new venture, Living Water Mental Health BRAIN Treatment Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (application pending).

Living Water will be proud to offer the latest in FDA-cleared, innovative treatment solutions that are non-invasive, drug-free, and come with minimal side effects, including accelerated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (aTMS) and PRISM Neurofeedback for PTSD.

I am blessed to be working with Owen Muir MD DFAACAP , one of the leaders in interventional brain medicine and psychiatry, who will be serving as our Medical Advisor, as well as the talented and experienced healthcare veterans Robert Jordshaugen, MBA and Lincoln Fish . (If you're not following them or familiar with their work, you should immediately!)

This calling on my heart was to not only bring these novel treatment solutions to my community but to do so as a non-profit organization so that profits would never be put before people's mental health.

We are committed to sowing back into the kingdom by offering programs, educational opportunities, scholarships, and supporting mental health-focused projects that reduce the dual stigma of a mental health diagnosis and seeking treatment.

This commitment is expressed directly in our mission statement:

To glorify God by providing all those in mental health need with the latest evidence-based treatments to live a restored life, in peace and free from suffering.

No longer can I sit on the sidelines of the mental health pandemic. There is far too much suffering, and now, finally, we have tools that can make a real difference in the life of someone who is struggling.

I founded my first business, Momentum Events, as a for-profit because I believed I could build a profitable business that delivered a better product at a cheaper price while treating its employees better than the industry standard. This time, my new venture is motivated by an entirely different type of return.

One day, I will need to answer for how I used my gifts and talents to make this world a better place - and I can think of no better way for me to use my past misery than to dedicate my future ministry to help alleviate suffering.

Thank you for letting me share my story. There are far too many people to thank to list them all here, but I pray you know who you are. The support, friendship, mentorship, brothrthood and comfort ya'll have provided over the years will remain in my heart forever. It is through what you've done and how you have let yourself be used that put me in a position to help others in need.

With gratitude,
