For me, the “why” was simple, infosec presented a complex, interesting, highly engaging, and rewarding challenge. As someone who’s been into computers and technology my whole life, once I started learning about information security and how it encouraged people to solve problems in unique ways and make systems do things no one thought they were capable of, I was easily hooked. Add to that the flair of malware, cybercrime, mysterious groups with nefarious intent, and everything else that cyber defense typically involves investigating, and I believe you have a recipe for a job that is easy to make a lifelong interesting career. In my experience, being in cybersecurity has lived up to all those expectations and is a journey I’m as excited as ever to continue on! – John Hubbard

I began my foray into the world of Information Technology and IT security during my tenure in the military. This realm had been largely unexplored to me due to the nature of my official job title. However, some of the concepts of the IT security principles paralleled core concepts I dealt with in my other position. At the moment of this realization, I became hooked.

Since then, I’ve been able to continue my education across a wide range of modalities, from working with RF to local network defense and exploitation to leveraging mobile devices. The more I learn, the more I find to explore. This ever-expanding world of learning continues to draw me in and motivates me to explore. It provides a sense of adventure while also giving me real-world skills I can hopefully translate into a career following my bachelor’s program.

I would also say that teaching these skills is very rewarding. My final two years in the military were spent training fellow Service Members in cybersecurity skills necessary to help protect themselves and the mission while at home and abroad. Seeing our students go from looking like a deer in the headlights to applying skills they were taught in very austere and demanding environments provided an unbelievable sense of pride and accomplishment. I feel like that experience and the associated feelings also push me toward working within the IT and Cyber security space.

Finally, I want to be prepared. I believe being a responsible citizen entails being ready for any problem that comes along. As the Internet of Things grows, Artificial Intelligence becomes more intertwined in everyday life and criminals increase their efforts to exploit vulnerabilities, I feel it necessary to understand the threats and how to mitigate them. I can compare it to owning a house but not taking the time to understand how the door and window locks work, or how to utilize a fire alarm - Harrison A.

I started in telecommunications. A co-worker mentioned getting some basic IT certs (A+, Net+, Sec+). Once I got those, everything started to fall into place for me. From desktop support, to cyber defense (incident management) and now teaching. I love teaching to most though.

Originally, I began my career in IT with ambitions to become a highly skilled network and infrastructure engineer. Since I was transitioning from driving trucks to managing information systems, I needed a career path where I could be quickly trained and employed in a short time. "Cyber Security" wasn't really a thing then, the name existed, but nearly everyone at that time felt it was synonymous with Information Assurance and Security. It wasn't until I was hired at the NSA that the curtain was pulled back, and I was clearly shown the differences. I didn't seek employment at the NSA because I wanted to get into cyber security, especially as my motives were financially based. At that time, the highest-paying jobs working in Government required the highest security clearances. Jobs at Fort Bragg would not sponsor such clearances then, so I looked to the Intel Community. Once at the NSA, I got a crash course equivalent to a second college degree in Cyber Security Operations: Offensive Cyber Operations (OCO) and Defensive Cyber Operations (DCO). Originally, I was placed in a DCO shop, where I struggled quite a bit as I didn't understand how a cyber attack was conducted. I was familiar with all the terms from certification training and college but had never been put in the analyst chair to detect and dissect an attack. However, once I began a tour at the Red Team, OCO on DoD targets where we test vulnerabilities and conduct Adversary Emulation, I learned the TTPs and signatures/artifacts many tools leave behind. My offensive skills were honed even more once I moved to my next shop, where we conducted OCO on foreign targets. Afterward, I moved back to a DCO shop performing IS intrusion forensic analysis. From there on, I was hooked on OCO/Penetration testing. I loved the challenge and the feeling of getting a shell on a remote system. I began focusing on specializing my talents specifically Pentesting/Red Team activities. Never looked back. As for the "why", initially = financially driven, now = still financially driven, but also powered by being good at my job and remaining in demand. - Steve Lauterbach

Since my youth, I lived on the razor's edge of this field. From the beginning, it appeared to show hidden elements of the digital domain and provided you eyes to see what usual users could not see. At that time, the Cyber Security was not a trend like nowadays. Over time, when I completed computer engineering studies, I had the chance to make what was an hobby until that time to my main job: among several job offers, there was a big opportunity on the Cyber Security field and I started to apply the engineering mindset by being recruited as Cyber Security architect in the finance field with the purpose to design security solutions.
