Email is dead. LinkedIn is the new email.

Email is dead. LinkedIn is the new email.

I am fed up with emails… my inbox is flooded by emails…. That’s no longer the best way to reach me (hint: best is WhatsApp and LinkedIn). Most of them are send my robots and automated campaign marketing machines… from people I do not even know… from people whose names are [email protected] or [email protected]. Seriously? Finding the important emails nowadays is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

I care about conversations. Meaningful conversations. And I love LinkedIn (yes, since 2004). LinkedIn is a network where you build real connections with real life people (please do not accept connections from people you have never met in real life or at least from people you are not sure they even exist).

I still meet people who think LinkedIn is the place you go once every 3-4 years to look for your next job… damn… I am on LinkedIn every day. I use it to connect to top-level people and if my message is purposeful and straight to the point, I usually get a response. I love that. I reply to people who send me messages! In addition, if their message is not to the point I just tell them I am not interested.

I am not surprised that Microsoft bought LinkedIn for $26 billions! Now Microsoft are going to use it to their own advantage (and their partners too). Because it is the great way to engage in meaningful conversations with people, they have started training their staff (and us partners too) on how to best use LinkedIn to engage… They call it Social Selling. I am at a training session now and they asked us to write our first though provoking article… Expect people from Microsoft and partners to start reaching out to you directly soon.

Watch my 2 min shoutout:

Now what do you think? Was it a good move to buy LinkedIn? Do you think Social Selling is the new way to go? Are you planning to use LinkedIn to develop your business?

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers!

Great read, Alex. I would say social selling is seen as an add-on tool as we can still see engagement through e-mail and calling but we can be smarter when reaching out through social listening and contextualize the information when we are reaching out, and of course inmail and sharing information online. Here is a quick blog on it if you are interested: https://www.salesforlife.com/blog/back-to-basics-what-social-selling-is-and-isnt

Email is dead! Flooded with spam n phishing mails. But it's still main form to communicate with customers. Will LinkedIn messaging or other form of IM overtake email?
