At the recently concluded International Energy Agency and other association reports, it has been mentioned that global emissions have increased in 2017 and share of fossil energy continues to be almost the same.
It has also been reported that government incentives have limited impact and once they are withdrawn business as usual activities resume albeit with increased intensity.
What are the options?
- Energy Efficiency
- Renewable/Clean Energy
- Clean Technologies with carbon capture & storage.
Low hanging fruits of Energy Efficiency are yet to be fully tapped. Renewable energy like solar & wind continues to evade reliability & efficiency and cost of carbon capture & storage affecting implementation.
The International Energy Agency and other associations are hoping for a mix of 50% Renewable/Clean Energy by 2050.
For renewable/clean energy to become the primary source of energy concerted efforts must be focused on research and development so as to increase efficiency, reliability, productivity and cost-effectiveness.
While fundamental research needs to be undertaken by institutions of higher learning, applied research needs to be supported by the industries.
Time has come for collaboration, cooperation and partnership among Academia, Industries and Governments to move further.
Transforming higher education should be taken to achieve that goal.
