Elton John's question for entrepreneurs: "What have I got to do to make you want me?"

That question stems from the second verse of the lyrics of the song “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word” as written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. It was recorded by Elton John and released in 1976.

If you are an entrepreneur, you will be asking that question a million times and more… to the market… in the name of the products and services you are offering.

“What have I got to do to be heard?” is the next line of the lyrics. There are thousands of unsuccessful companies all over the world buried in the history of business life. They were wonderful products and unmatchable services, which had to leave the marketplace because not enough people were aware of them. Assuming the products are tailored right for the market, if the financial results don’t reflect your expectations in a reasonable time frame it usually means that something has prevented them from being heard or maybe you did not shout loud and/or long enough.

If you cannot find the right answers to the question, chances are that you have to terminate that new business venture. I know it’s hard… to accept defeat even if it is due to a reason out of your control. But you should have taken even that reason into calculation.

The third line says: “What do I say when it’s all over?” Nothing… because as the last line of the verse admits: “And sorry seems to be the hardest word.”
