Elon Musk's Grok 3: Is It Better Than ChatGPT 4?

Elon Musk and his team at X.ai released Grok 3 a few nights ago during a live stream on X, and 2.7 million people watched! I was one of them. Here's what I learned and what I think you should know.

Ludicrous Speed of Progress

Grok 3 stands out because of how quickly it was made. X.ai, the company that created Grok, is only 19 months old, but they've already gone from Grok 0 to Grok 3. In the live stream, Musk and his team talked about how fast they worked, saying their speed of development is faster than any other chatbot.

Huge Computer Power: The Key to Grok 3

The team said that getting enough computer chips and power was really hard over the last 19 months. To fix this, X.ai built a huge building for their computers, and they finished the first part in just 122 days. Then, they saw they needed more, so they made the building twice as big in only 82 days.

Now, Grok 3 uses 200,000 graphics cards to learn, which shows how big and important this project is.

Performance: Doing Better Than Others

In the presentation, the team showed tests comparing Grok 3 and Grok 3 Mini to other top AI models like DeepSeek, Claude, ChatGPT 4.0, and Gemini 2. The tests show that Grok 3 does better than these others in many ways.

It’s especially good at thinking tasks because of its new "think mode." This helps Grok 3 think better, and tests prove it’s better than models like 01 Mini, DeepSeek R1, and Gemini 2 Flash at thinking.

Creativity: Making a New Game

During the live stream, Grok 3 did something really cool: it made a new game by mixing Tetris and Bejeweled. The AI wrote the code for a game that has the shape of Tetris but the matching rules of Bejeweled, where things disappear when you match three colors.

Musk said this is a big deal because it shows AI can be creative. He emphasized the point that when AI can make a new game by combining two old ones and make it fun and fast, it’s starting to be "creative."

This shows Grok 3 can come up with new ideas, not just copy old ones.

Deep Search: An AI Helper for Research

They also announced Deep Search, an AI agent that can look for information on the internet and can do in 10 minutes what would have probably taken you an hour. I haven't done tests myself but this feature reminds me of OpenAI's Deep Research and Deep seek's R1.

They showed how it could help predict who wins March Madness, maybe even winning a billion dollars from Warren Buffett’s challenge.

This tool can save people a lot of time. Musk said it can do in 10 minutes what usually takes an hour to find out.

Coming Soon: Talking to Grok 3

In the Q&A, the team said they’ll soon add a voice feature, like ChatGPT’s voice mode. This will let people talk to Grok 3 like they’re talking to a person. Musk said he tried it that day, and even though it’s not perfect, it feels like talking to a human. They plan to release it next week, making Grok 3 even more interactive.

Grok 3 vs. ChatGPT: A Simple Test

To see how good Grok 3 is, I tested it and ChatGPT. I gave both my YouTube channel’s data from the last 90 days and asked them to suggest eight videos I should make next, with titles and dates, and why.

Grok 3’s Answer

Grok 3 looked at the data and gave me a plan. It said I should make videos about AI tools, live videos, and LinkedIn tips because those did well before. It told me to upload a video every three days. It explained that these topics got a lot of views and new subscribers in the past.

ChatGPT’s Answer

But ChatGPT didn’t use my data at first. It suggested general topics like "10 Quick Personal Branding Tips" and "Don’t Make These 3 Big Mistakes in Your Brand." When I asked why it didn’t look at the AI trends in my data, ChatGPT said it guessed based on what usually works, not on my specific data. It agreed that Grok 3’s answer was better because it used my data.

This is important because if I didn’t already know what works for my channel, ChatGPT’s suggestions might delay my progress.

This test showed that Grok 3 is better at using the information I gave it. ChatGPT is still good, but in this case, it didn’t use my data and just gave general advice.

Conclusion

Grok 3 has taken xAI from an underdog into a formidable player in the AI race. Once trailing behind ChatGPT and Claude, it now rivals them with its impressive data analysis, creativity, and rapid innovation, proving doubters wrong and making the competition razor-close.

I'll also add this, during the live stream release of Grok 3 Elon wore a shirt with the Malenia character from the video game Elden Ring. Malenia is know for saying, ,"I am Malenia, Blade of Miquella, and I have never known defeat."

The question is, does ChatGPT still lead the AI race? And if so, for how long? Maybe Peter Thiel was right when he once said in an interview, "Never bet against Elon."
