Elon Musk Announces Plans for ‘TruthGPT’

In an interview with Tucker Carlson this week, Elon Musk said he’s working on a rival to ChatGPT. Echoing a February tweet, Musk said the solution – which he describes as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” – will be called TruthGPT. During the discussion, Musk also rejected forecasts of an apocalyptic, AI-dominated future, remarking, “AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe.”??

Musk helped co-found OpenAI, but suggested that its pivot to for-profit operations could pose ethical concerns. At this point, it is unclear how much (if any) work has already gone into developing the solution. The Verge notes that Musk established a new company, X.AI, back in March. He was also a recent signatory on an open letter calling for a pause on AI development.?

Artist Wins and Rejects Prestigious Prize for AI-Generated ‘Photo’

Chatbots have dominated the year’s tech headlines to such a degree that it’s easy to forget about the image generators that first grabbed our attention. Before the public engaged with ChatGPT, solutions like Midjourney and DALL-E 2 were raising questions about the nature of art and concerns about the future employability of artists.?

This week, Berlin-based photographer Boris Eldagesen brought image generators back into the spotlight when he formally turned down a prize for ‘The Electrician.’ Last month, the ‘photo’ won in the Open Category at the Sony World Photography Awards. The eerie image, which shows two sepia-toned women, was created with the help of AI. On his website, Eldagaesen describes it as coming to life via “a complex interplay of prompt engineering, inpating, and outpainting.” He also claims that his use of AI was, in part, a test of readiness for the world of photography competitions. After learning that it had failed Eldagesen’s test, the World Photography Organization dismissed the stunt and noted that its competition would always be about championing human artists.???
