Ellisville is located in Jones county and conveniently located to Hattiesburg Jackson, Mobile, Biloxi, and New Orleans. With a population of less than 5000 and four neighborhoods, it's the 73rd largest city in Mississippi.
Way back when, Mississippi's Declaration of Secession was more a reflection of planters' interests than most, and even less in Jones County. "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery…" was how it began, but for most in Jones and neighboring counties, farmers weren't interested in slavery.
However, when the civil war came, anyone who opposed the state's new Confederate government was deemed traitors, and put to death if they refused to join the Confederate Army. Meanwhile, Jones and neighboring counties, especially Covington County to the west had become havens for Confederate deserters.
A lot goes through a soldiers' head when at war. Back then, the lack of food and supplies was demoralizing enough, while reports of poor conditions back home made men fear for their wives and children.
All over the south small farms where deteriorating from neglect as women and children struggled to maintain them with few resources. Not much unlike what we saw in the 90's in our urban neighborhoods during the War On Drugs; with our appetite to incarcerate so many husbands and fathers that linger to this day...
Life isn't easy during war, ordinary people's inventory and livestock were often taken by the Confederate tax-in-kind agents, who took excessive amounts. After the war had raged on for several years, a band of deserters from Jones and neighboring counties banned together, as a means of protection from those very Confederate authorities, and their crippling tax collections. The independent bunch of the Pine Belt formed a separate government, known as the "Free State of Jones". They fought in over a dozen skirmishes with Confederate soldiers, and were known to of preformed several raids capturing wagon loads of corn that had been collected for tax.
A number of deaths were also believed to be at their hands of tax collectors and conscript officers. By the spring of 1864, an American flag was displayed over the courthouse in Ellisville; an official letter was sent to Union General Sherman declaring Jones County's independence from the Confederacy. By July 1864, the Natchez Courier reported that Jones County had seceded from the Confederacy.
