Ella Kissi-Debrah - an innocent child the victim of inaction.
How many more innocent people will die and suffer from ill health whilst the officials of the United Kingdom ignore offers of a solution? How many people have already lost their lives or are now suffering from poor health after being poisoned by fossil fuelled vehicles.
Yesterday, a coroner made legal history after a two week inquiry, by ruling that air pollution was a cause of the death of nine-year-old, Ella Kissi-Debrah. The verdict given by Philip Barlow, inner south London coroner said Ella’s death in February 2013 had been caused by severe asthma secondary to air pollution exposure, and acute respiratory failure. This means air pollution has been listed as a cause of death for the first time in the UK and worldwide.
Why do local authorities, city councils, MPs, county councils, mayors, councillors, drive thru Restaurateurs etc. still refuse to admit they are in breach of World Health Organization and European Union guidelines? They have all been offered a solution but have ignored these offers. Levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) near Ella's home exceeded World Health Organization and European Union guidelines. There was a recognised failure to reduce the levels of nitrogen dioxide, We know that air pollution is a public health crisis with up to 40,000 deaths each year in the UK said to be related to air pollution and globally 7 million people dying every year.
Rosamund, Ella’s mum, has been campaigning tirelessly for the last 7 years for Justice for Ella and to ensure that air quality is improved for all. As Rosamund said in the press conference following the ruling, “this was about my daughter...but also it's about other children walking around our city...there are still illegal levels of air pollution now as we speak, so this matter is far from over." A 2018 report found unlawful levels of pollution, which were detected at a monitoring station one mile from Ella's home, contributed to her fatal asthma attack.
