The Elites and National Development: Are We Doing Enough?

The Elites and National Development: Are We Doing Enough?

In Nigeria, a peculiar trend is emerging: while many elites offer in-depth analysis on the country's state, their direct participation in the electoral process remains surprisingly low. This raises a critical question about the role and responsibility of the "elite."

Who Are the Elites?

Elites are often seen as a small, influential group within a society that wields significant power, wealth, and influence. Prof. Vincent Onugbogu describes elites as citizens who disproportionately control society's economic resources, political power, or philosophical direction. But elites aren’t just well-dressed executives; they are also intellectuals, political influencers, student leaders, labor leaders, and religious figures—those who shape the ideas and movements of the day.

Historical Examples of Elite Influence

Figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi used their platforms for the greater good, challenging injustices and catalyzing positive change. They recognized the responsibility that came with their influence and used it to serve their communities and the world at large.

The Question for Today's Elites

With privilege comes responsibility. As a society, we often talk about the gaps in Nigeria’s development, but for those who hold power, influence, or wealth, a personal question arises: "What am I doing with the resources I've been given?"

To whom much is given, much is indeed required.

What Would God Think?

If we are among the "elite"—whether in influence, intellect, or resources—are we stewarding our blessings wisely, or are we squandering them in comparison to the rest of the world? Let’s challenge ourselves to put our influence to positive use and leave a legacy of impact.

The future of our communities, our nation, and our world may well depend on how we choose to answer this question. #Leadership #Responsibility #NationalDevelopment #Nigeria
