Elite Performance Engineering - The Future!
Never heard this terminology before?
It is based on the four pillars (or corner stones, if you will) of developing optimum performance in any sport in order to beat your opponent most of the time (one may beat some opponents all the time, but no-one beats everyone else all of the time).
The Four Pillars:
1. Developing superior physiological ability (being stronger, fitter, faster, less injury prone, etc.)
2. Developing superior technical skills (better at handling and controlling the tools of one’s sport)
3. Developing superior tactical skills (better at applying and executing game strategies/tactics, anticipating the opponent’s next move, etc.)
4. Developing superior mental skills (better concentration, more confident, better at controlling emotions such as fears, doubts, etc., i.e., being able to operate in ‘the flow zone’.)
What exactly is ‘Elite Performance Engineering’?
Simply put, it is the science of combining the tools used in various highly specialised fields of sport performance under one umbrella to untap all the potential an athlete has. It is not unlike combining the skills and expertise of a high number of well-qualified professionals from different functional backgrounds, having to work together as a project team to successfully build the World’s highest building.
The Functional Areas of Elite Performance Engineering in Soccer:
1. Physiological (Nutrition, recovery, strength, stamina, equilibrioception, flexibility, explosive power, cardiovascular endurance, injury prevention, rehabilitation, etc.)
2. Technical requirements (taking free kicks, penalties, dribbling, scissors, tackling, passing, feinting, foot trap, knee trap, chest trap, heading, volleys, etc.)
3. Tactical skills (Defending, timing attacking and supporting runs, maintaining formations, using positive and negative space, finishing, etc)
4. Psychological characteristics (Being disciplined, assertive, confident, drive, commitment, self-esteem, decisiveness, composure, determination, self-control, etc.)
5. Mental skills requirements (speed in processing information, spatial orientation, visualisation, spatial recall, task switching, selective and divided attention, response inhibition, reasoning and problem-solving skills, anticipation, etc.)
6. Psychometric testing (determining coachability, work ethic, competitiveness, perseverance, game preparedness, mental toughness, accident proneness, focus, need for security, etc.)
Who are the members of this sports management team tasked to get the most out of an individual sportsman/woman and the team?
A typical Elite Performance Engineering team will comprise out of a Sports Nutritionist/Dietician, Biokineticist, Physiotherapist, Tactical Coach, Technical Coach, Performance Psychologist, and Psychometrician to perform the different functions required to understand what the needs of the sportsman/woman and team are in order to build the champions of tomorrow.
I’ve often heard “It takes a village to raise a child.”
What does it take to raise a champion? It takes an Elite Performance Engineering team to raise the champions of tomorrow!

6 年You're welcome, Peter. My philosophy is quite simple, 'If one person can benefit from a post it was worthwhile publishing. Throwing a small pebble into a pond may have rippling effects way beyond where you can see! All the best!
Thank you for the posting, Edward. It looks like a pretty good map for everyone not just elite sports men and women.
