The concept of Elimination of Possibilities (EoP) is simple but powerful: it’s a systematic approach to narrowing down solutions by ruling out what isn’t the issue. Instead of trying to solve everything at once, you break the problem down by eliminating the least likely causes and focusing on the most probable ones.
In my role as a TA, I've used this method for everything from figuring out why the PC or Laptop cannot be booted up, to identifying why a piece of code isn’t running as expected. It’s all about reducing complexity and focusing on what actually matters.
Benefits of Elimination of Possibilities (EoP) strategy:
How to Apply the Elimination of Possibilities (EoP) strategy:
Real-Life Example:
One example of how I’ve applied the Elimination of Possibilities (EoP) strategy occurred at Asia Pacific University (APU), where I work as a Technical Assistant. A classroom projector wasn’t working, and the issue seemed to be related to the HDMI connection. I used the EoP strategy to troubleshoot and quickly pinpoint the problem.
Possible Causes:
I started by eliminating possible causes that would have cost me the most time to check, like the HDMI extender or long cable. Instead, I focused on the cable and laptop ports that were easiest to test.
Through this process of elimination, I was able to identify the faulty HDMI port on my laptop without wasting time on other potential causes. This saved me valuable time and allowed me to resolve the issue quickly.
Final Thoughts
The Elimination of Possibilities (EoP) is a deceptively simple strategy that can make a big difference in how efficiently you solve problems. It allows you to focus your efforts, save time, and tackle issues with precision. Whether you’re a TA, a student, or just someone working through a problem, EoP helps you stay focused and avoid unnecessary distractions. I encourage you to incorporate this strategy into your problem-solving toolkit. It’s a method or strategy that’s saved me countless hours and kept me from getting overwhelmed.
