Elevators Provide Situational Awareness on Jobsites

Elevators Provide Situational Awareness on Jobsites

KONE, the global elevator and escalator company, can now use elevator and IoT data to create a real-time picture of a construction site’s activities. The company is a partner in the ACTOR project, which aims to automate the coordination of a project’s actors.

ACTOR is automating construction coordination

Construction sites have dozens or sometimes hundreds of various contractors with their staff. Controlling and coordinating them to make the construction process run smoothly is a huge task.

Automated optimization of the site’s activities would increase everyone's productivity. This would shorten lead times, leading to more profitable business and decreased CO2 emissions. Being in control also makes workers happier.

ACTOR requires real-time data from the site and the supply chain to reach its goals, and KONE’s SiteFlow serves that need.

Elevators as data sources

KONE is promoting using its elevators during construction as an alternative to traditional construction hoists. SiteFlow automates data collection from the site's elevators and extends these capabilities to passages and gates.

SiteFlow uses inexpensive RFID stickers that you can attach to tools, hard hats, and materials.

When workers and objects pass IoT sensors, the sticker identifier is read to KONE’s cloud software for processing. The elevator also provides data on its movements, doors, load weight, and other parameters.

Real-time control and management

The data opens rich opportunities for control, management, and guidance.

Supervisors use the browser-based visual interface to monitor the people and material flow in the elevators. They can control elevator access and traffic and prioritize specific team or material transports.

SiteFlow knows where workers and materials are on the site. Supervisors can spot any work delays or deviations by integrating SiteFlow with the schedule of another ACTOR partner, Flow Technologies.

The automation also supports the on-site workers. With a smartphone, they can monitor elevator availability and locate materials, tools, and job sites. Even finding the locations of waste containers has proven handy.

SiteFlow supports the robotization of the construction site. In ACTOR, the data-collecting Spot robot can use an API to communicate with the system, for example, to call an elevator.
