The Elevator Pitch (Part 2)

While "The Elevator Pitch (Part 1)" extolled the virtues of resume promotion, "Where's my Diagram?" opined over the lack of prototyping.? So, I thought I would bring it all home by demonstrating an elevator pitch prototype.

Twenty five years ago, when Google first got lucky, the tech world was a different place. Client server applications, having recently replaced mainframes and green screen CRTs, ruled the enterprise each with PC-based GUI's.

The idea that browsers would become the universal desktop GUI was not even a thing. And then, as technologies often do, tools like ColdFusion suddenly made possible browsers as an option for client server GUI development.

Today, it has become a browser world. A GUI that is not browser-based is now the exception rather than the rule. I can count on one hand the number of non-browser GUI's.? And all of them will eventually become browser-based.

But we're still awash in slideware.? Originating as cellophane sheets, rear-projected on bulky overhead projectors, this technology was itself adapted from photographic slide projection,? a 100 year old technology, in its own right.

Isn't it time for a change?? Wouldn't original formats be preferred??? Highlight the original format and lose the 40 point text in landscape.? It would behave much like search except that it's curated and intended to be fully repeatable.

So, the paradigm shift is already upon us. We simply need to adapt to original content that can be displayed with highlighted text.? And forward thinkers have already been presenting?highlighted original content, some, for years.?

Building a curated highlighter is quite simple. First, create an Excel where column one is the anchor link and the rest are search terms. And build as many rows as you need. Now, we just search it from the original format document.

My resume javascript will show the basic idea. We'll start with the regular resume document. Next, elevator pitches are presented in the second column.? The first has been invoked. Just click any of the left hand links to demonstrate the others.

Now, imagine this used for teaching. Highlight the actual text books instead of summarizing them in bulleted list lesson plans. And imagine getting the highlights from the instructor at the end of every class. No more note taking at all!

This minimalist paradigm shift is certain to become a game changer.? To prove it, check your hard drive. The sheer number of slide shows will surprise you. Now, Imagine they're all gone. They're already obsolete, anyway.

Twenty years from now, developers will hear PowerPoint and think electric hole punch. The prevailing software will probably be a floating modal with just a couple of paging buttons. Highlight the desired content and away you go.?
