Elevating Teams: Why Pursuing a Hobby Builds Better Professionals

Elevating Teams: Why Pursuing a Hobby Builds Better Professionals

I learned this the hard way back in 2003, when I visited an on-campus doctor for a persistent headache. He recommended to me a BP tablet as a “tonic” and said, “Nothing to worry about, but since you’re in a fast-paced environment, this will help.” He added that once I started, I couldn’t stop taking them—and here I am, 20 years later, still on those tablets. In hindsight, maybe the doctor should have told me to change my lifestyle instead of relying on medication. It’s a lesson I now take seriously: focus on your health as much as your work.

Let’s be clear—there is no replacement for hard work. It’s the key ingredient to anyone’s growth. And when we talk about work-life balance, let’s not forget that “work” comes before “life.” But here’s the catch: no matter how hard you’re working, your focus on health should remain constant. If you don’t take care of yourself, no amount of work will yield long-term success.

That’s where hobbies, relationships, and balance come in. While work is essential, how you spend your time outside of it also plays a big role in your overall career trajectory. Hobbies aren’t just for fun; they’re for growth. Whether you're into golf (like some of us ??), painting, or trekking, giving time to these interests is like cross-training for your mind. It fosters creativity, builds resilience, and—surprisingly—expands your professional network in unexpected ways.

I’ve had a couple of job move discussions initiated at the golf course and later moved to meeting rooms. It's a reminder that strong connections often form in more relaxed environments, where conversations flow freely and opportunities arise.

Equally important is the time we spend attending events—whether they’re industry conferences or informal meet-ups. These settings are ideal for nurturing meaningful relationships. Building these connections isn’t just about collecting business cards; it’s about staying engaged, showing genuine interest in others, and maintaining long-term professional relationships that can open doors when you least expect it. Some of my most valuable professional connections have been maintained through casual catch-ups at events or even a quick chat after a speaking session.

Spending time outside of work also enhances problem-solving skills. A seemingly unrelated hobby can spark new ideas or perspectives that might not emerge while sitting at a desk. For example, some of the best strategic decisions I’ve made have come after a long round of golf or during a reflective walk in nature. The mind works wonders when it’s not stuck in “work mode.”

Moreover, engaging in hobbies builds better leadership qualities. When you’re pursuing something you’re passionate about, you learn discipline, patience, and how to handle setbacks. These qualities directly translate into the workplace—helping you manage stress, inspire your team, and stay focused on long-term goals.

Balance is key. A well-rounded professional life isn’t just about working hard; it’s about creating space to recharge. That’s when your mind is at its sharpest, your relationships are at their strongest, and your potential for growth is at its highest.

So, take time to invest in yourself beyond the office. Whether it’s through hobbies, attending events, or nurturing meaningful relationships, when you’re happier and healthier, you elevate not only your own potential but also your team’s.

What’s your go-to hobby? I’d love to hear how it’s helped you in your journey!
