Elevating Personal Branding on Linkedin

Elevating Personal Branding on Linkedin

Hello Peeps:

Welcome to another edition of my newsletter. ?In this edition of our LinkedIn newsletter, we’ll explore the art of crafting a magnetic personal brand that turns connections into career-defining opportunities on Linkedin.

LinkedIn can help you build a professional presence that showcases your work to the people you most want to connect with. So, let's uncover 9 ways to build your personal brand on Linkedin

1: Define your goals:

The first step in personal branding is always to take action and evaluate your goals. With defined goals, measuring your progress and determining whether or not your branding efforts are paying off will be easier.

Some common goals for personal branding on LinkedIn could include:

  • Increasing your visibility online
  • Growing your professional network
  • Enhancing your industry expertise
  • Boosting your job prospects
  • Showcasing your personal brand

2: Research your competition:

To get started, research your competition. Look at their profiles and observe what they are doing right and, more importantly, what they are doing wrong. Identifying their mistakes will allow you to create a profile that stands out from the rest. When you understand your competition well, it’s time to start creating your profile.

3: Create a professional profile:

Your profile is one of the first things potential employers, clients, and business partners will see when they Google you, so it’s important to put your best foot forward.

a: Here are a few tips for creating a professional profile that will help you build your personal brand on LinkedIn:

  • Create an SEO-friendly Professional Headline.
  • Add a professional photo. Profiles with photos get many more views.
  • Write a dazzling About/Summary section. Tell your personal brand story. Generate chemistry!
  • Focus on including the right keywords for your personal brand.
  • Add the maximum 50 skills in the Skills & Endorsements section.
  • Beyond the About/Summary, Experience, and Education sections, fully populate every other applicable profile section, including the little-used sections – Languages, Volunteering Experience, Organizations, Honors & Awards, Courses, Patents, Publications, Projects, Certifications.

b: Maximum number of characters:

?Each Profile section has a maximum number of characters and spaces. Do your best to use all the allowed space for content. At this writing, here are the maximum character counts for the most-used sections:

  • Professional headline = 120
  • Name field, last name = 40 (allows you to add suffixes, certifications, former names, maiden names, nicknames)
  • About = 2,000
  • Company names = 100
  • Job titles = 100
  • Job descriptions = 2,000

4: Optimize Your Profile for Search:

LinkedIn is just as much of a search engine as it is a social media platform, so the words you choose matter immensely. What keywords do you want to be found for when potential clients or employers search LinkedIn? Determine those keywords and use them in your headline, job title, summary, and job descriptions. Choosing the right words makes the difference between your profile being found or being invisible.

5: Approach LinkedIn Like a Living Resume:

Your LinkedIn profile is not something you can set and forget. Update your profile whenever you make a career move, speak at a conference, publish a new article, take a new course, etc. Think of LinkedIn as your living resume.

6: Use Your Description to Sell Yourself:

Take the time to really sell yourself in your description.

Get specific: make sure to include any facts and figures. Highlight your greatest accomplishments that will be relevant to the clients and/or jobs you want to attract. Avoid jargon at all costs. Your profile description functions just like a cover letter – keep it concise and clear, and don’t shy away from selling how great you are.

7: Build Relevant Connections on the Platform:

??Once your profile is impeccably optimized, you’ll be ready to grow your network and build your strategic brand associations on LinkedIn. This keeps your network fresh and active and strengthens your global connections. For people you know, have met, or are about to meet, LinkedIn gives you even more information about them.

Tip: If you’re trying to connect with someone you don’t know, include a personal note explaining why you’d like to connect.

8: Publish on LinkedIn:

We live in a feed-driven world. Americans now engage with seven different sources of information every day through multiple channels. According to Entrepreneur, Millennials spend 18 hours a day consuming media.

Today, LinkedIn is the definitive professional publishing platform. In fact, more than 1 million people have published more than 3 million posts on LinkedIn. As for Millennials, they represent nearly 30% of all long-form publishers on LinkedIn. Publish content on LinkedIn to showcase thought leadership, of course, and show the world what you care about. Once you begin to publish on the LinkedIn Publisher platform, you’ll quickly see a spike in your profile views.

9: Stay Consistent With Your Posts:

While building a personal brand, you need to show up more than a few times. It would yield better results if you were consistent at it, so try showing up every day. Unarguably, consistency can be one of the hardest things to do. However, by making your presence known on LinkedIn, you attract people to hear what you say. Therefore, you’ll need to publish content, interact and reach out to connections on LinkedIn consistently.

LinkedIn offers an incredible platform for personal branding, and by navigating it wisely, you can turn connections into remarkable opportunities.
