Elevating the Fire Safety Conversation with a Powerful Plea from Child House Fire Survivors
Optimism is a great thing, but as with most things in life, it’s all about having a balance. Optimism bias could cause us to overestimate the likelihood of positive events and underestimate the risk for potential hazards.

Risk is Real
Most people find it hard to imagine they will ever experience a fire in their home. In fact, 40 percent of people believe they are more likely to win the lottery or get struck by lightning than experience a home fire[1]. The unfortunate reality is: every day, at least one child dies from a home fire[2]. This year, over 1,000 people have died in house fires across North America – including children[3].
As a mother of two myself, this is concerning and Cause For Alarm. For the third year, Kidde’s Cause For Alarm campaign is supporting vulnerable communities and families by addressing gaps in education and access to fire safety measures, including providing resources and life-saving devices to at-risk communities.

Elevating Young Voices Through Music
Last year, Cause For Alarm introduced a memorable jingle for children titled, “Beeps That Last, Get Out Fast.” The catchy sing-a-long song was created as a fire safety education tool to help kids easily recall what to do in the event of a house fire.
The jingle demonstrated that music is a powerful means of communication capable of reinforcing important messages and helping with recall. This year, to further inspire people to prioritize fire safety, we developed the “Living Jingle,” an emotional plea and call to action – directly from the voices of children who have been impacted by house fires.?
The Living Jingle features the voices of brave children who have survived house fires, reminding all who listen that the risk of a home fire is real for everyone. Their deeply personal house fire survival stories shed light on the reality of these harrowing experiences.

The Impact of Strategic Alliances
At Kidde, we believe that the only way to drive change is by working together. Through longstanding partnerships with organizations like The Home Depot, the National Association of State Fire Marshals, and newer collaborations with National PTA, Kidde has deployed lifesaving devices and educational resources to communities nationwide. Through public-private partnerships, we also work with local and state governments to help advance legislation that will improve fire and carbon monoxide safety measures for everyone.?
We also know the importance of support from influential voices who help spread our fire safety message far and wide. For the second year in a row, we joined forces with professional quarterback and father Kirk Cousins who helped us donate $300,000 worth of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to communities in the greater Atlanta area.?
In addition, we’ve teamed up with multi-platinum recording artist and mom, Jordin Sparks, to rally behind the Living Jingle and help drive awareness for this year’s important fire safety message. The Living Jingle inspired Jordin to elevate this vital conversation in her home and helped her talk with her six-year-old son about the importance of fire safety. It’s through partnerships like these that we are able to authentically reach families and raise awareness about an important issue that might otherwise be overlooked.
