?? Elevating Data Journalism in Zimbabwe: Tools and Techniques for Impactful Data Visualisation (Data Viz)

As a data journalist passionate about amplifying local voices and driving positive change in Zimbabwe, I've come to appreciate the power of effective data visualisation. Presenting complex information in a clear and engaging way is crucial for capturing the attention of our audiences and inspiring action.

Free Online Tools for Data Viz

When I first started out, I was overwhelmed by the prospect of creating visualisations, but I soon discovered a wealth of free online tools that made the process much more accessible. A special thank you to Roxanne Joseph from Oxpeckers Investigative Environmental Journalism . Kudos Fiona Macleod . Here are a few of my personal favourites:

  1. Datawrapper - This user-friendly platform has been a game-changer for me. Its intuitive interface and wide range of chart types have allowed me to create visually stunning visualisations that bring my stories to life. ?? Nathan Guma has used it several times as well. I love that fact that, Datawrapper has our beloved map of Zimbabwe with provinces, districts and wards - how great is that.
  2. Flourish - As someone who loves crafting engaging narratives, Flourish has become an indispensable tool in my arsenal. The ability to combine charts, maps and text into interactive data stories keeps my readers hooked and coming back for more. ??
  3. Infogram - When I need to create eye-catching infographics or social media graphics, Infogram is my go-to choice. Its extensive library of templates and design elements has saved me countless hours and helped me elevate my visual storytelling. ??
  4. RAWGraphs- For those times when I want to dig deeper and customise every aspect of my visualisations, RAWGraphs is my open-source saviour. Its wide range of chart types and flexibility have allowed me to push the boundaries of what's possible in data journalism. ???

Storytelling with Data

While these tools are incredibly powerful, I've learned that effective data viz is about more than just creating pretty charts. It's about using data to tell compelling stories that resonate with your audience on a personal level. Well that's how Andiswa Matikinca summed it up. When presenting data, I always strive to keep my readers in mind. I use clear and concise language, avoid jargon and focus on the key insights that will have the most impact. ??I also make sure to put my data in context by providing relevant background information and comparing it to historical trends or benchmarks. This helps my readers understand the significance of my findings and why they should care.

Examples of Impactful Data Journalism in Zimbabwe

I'm inspired by the work of my fellow data journalists in Zimbabwe who are using visualisation to drive real change. A few examples that stand out to me:

  1. Interactive infographics on penalties for water & environmental pollution in Zimbabwe. This powerful visualisation has helped raise awareness about this critical issue on Environmental (mis)management in Zimbabwe. ??
  2. An analysis on Zimbabwe’s largest lithium mine, Bikita Minerals, accused of polluting water sources in the southern Masvingo province and drawing unsustainably large volumes of water from a dam that is the lifeline of local residents. By making this complex information more accessible, they're empowering citizens to hold their leaders accountable, exposing Zimbabwe’s lithium liability ??
  3. A data-driven investigation into Zimbabwe’s electricity deficit linked to widespread deforestation as illegal loggers continue to cut down trees to produce charcoal, which is sold in major cities such as Bulawayo and Harare. This powerful blend of data and human stories has sparked important conversations about a pressing social problem on Zimbabwe’s energy nightmare ??

By harnessing the power of data viz and storytelling, we can elevate data journalism in Zimbabwe and drive real change. So let's get creative, experiment with new tools and techniques and show the world the impact of data-driven reporting. ??

This is important. From the mentorship, I have been getting from experts like ZCMIL's director Divine Dube and Bellingcat's Emmanuel Freudenthal, I have learnt that visualisations can tell a large chunk of the story without repeating the same information in text! Visualisations therefore become rather critical.
