As neurons lose their ATP, and their mitochondria lose their ability to generate energy, our brains lose their cellularity and dementia ensues.

"...we suggest that the effects of fructose on the brain were originally to stimulate foraging and reduce cerebral energy demands. Although the pathway was meant to be beneficial, the mutation in uricase amplified the switch, and the introduction of the Western diet provided ample fuel to put it in high gear, with the attempt to conserve energy resulting in a severe reduction in the energy required to maintain the needs of the neurons. Indeed, the wandering response, which is very common in AD (169), may signify a persistent foraging response despite massive neuronal loss."
