Websites today are often sleek, visually appealing, and updated to follow the latest trends. However, prioritizing accessibility in your design is a powerful decision that can elevate your site to the next level while making it more inclusive and ethically aligned.

As digital and social landscapes continue to evolve, we have a responsibility to acknowledge the different needs of people who use technology, and to design websites with a range of abilities in mind. Recognizing the substantial spending power of people with disabilities in Canada and the USA, it’s clear that designing websites with accessibility in mind will become crucial for organizations looking to expand their audience and connect with them in meaningful ways.

Clean energy and accessibility come together in Dunsky Energy + Climate Advisors' new site

Since 2004, Dunsky Energy + Climate Advisors have supported governments, utilities, and corporations across North America in their efforts to fight climate change and accelerate the clean energy transition. In addition to performance-focused code improvements, a modern, authentic design strategy and enhanced navigation, achieving Level AA accessibility played a crucial part in creating a user-friendly and vivid digital experience in Dunsky's new website. This level of compliance required extensive testing and remediation. It was an honor to work with Dunsky to redesign and develop their website into a contemporary digital space that highlights the values, culture and personality of their team, along with their commitment to professional rigor.

Why did we title this newsletter "Clearing the Digital Ramp"? The cartoon below illustrates how clearing or shoveling a ramp creates access for all. When we improve digital accessibility, we are clearing "ramps" to create an easier path forward for ALL users.

In this cartoon, a man is clearing snow from stairs in front of a school while someone in a wheelchair waits to use the access ramp, still covered in snow. Others await access to either the ramp or stairs. Text reads: “Clearing the path for people with special needs clears the path for everyone!”
