Elevate Your Leadership - The Power of Being a Positive Role Model

?In modern day business, the essence of leadership extends beyond strategic thinking and decision-making. True leadership excellence hinges on the ability to be a positive role model.

This critical trait not only inspires and motivates teams but also creates a culture of trust, respect, and continuous growth.

I have quoted my friend and mentor, Les Brown, before when he said:

“Leadership is failing around the world due to a lack of values.”

I think another issue is the severe lack of positive role models; We only have to open a newspaper or switch on the TV to see that this is indeed the case….in just about every area of society. (I am glad that I do not have TV nor do I buy newspapers. This does not mean I am not aware of what is happening around the world, I just do not need it in my face for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or late evenings before going to bed.)

This is why, in this edition of my newsletter, I delve into why being a positive role model is paramount for leadership excellence and how you can cultivate and sustain this essential trait to remain relevant and adaptable in our ever-evolving environments.?

The Importance of Being a Positive Role Model

1.Inspiring Trust and Respect

Leaders who lead by example earn the trust and respect of their teams. This trust is foundational for effective collaboration and open communication, which are vital for achieving organizational goals.

I’m sure we have all heard the quote: “BE the change you want to see….” This is where that rubber hits the road.

2.Developing a Positive Work Culture

A positive role model promotes a culture of integrity, accountability, and excellence. Employees are more likely to emulate the behaviours and attitudes they observe in their leaders, creating a ripple effect throughout the organization.

By now, you might have guessed I love quotes, so here is another one to talk into the above: “What you do speaks so loud that we cannot hear what you say.

3.Enhancing Employee Engagement and Retention

When leaders exhibit positive behaviours and attitudes, employees feel valued and motivated. This leads to higher levels of engagement, job satisfaction, and retention, ultimately driving the organization’s success.

It is well known that people rarely leave organizations; They leave people. That’s why it is important to ensure your people DO feel that they matter, which is made easier when they follow a leader worth following. “People of value value people”?

4.Driving Continuous Improvement

Positive role models encourage a mindset of continuous learning and improvement. They inspire their teams to seek innovative solutions, embrace challenges, and strive for personal and professional growth.

Great leaders already know the value of a growth mindset, rather than a fixed one. ( A discussion for another time.). Being able to pass that on to their teams is one of the greatest gifts they can give them.

Growing as a Positive Role Model

1.Self-Awareness and Reflection

Start by understanding your strengths and areas for improvement. Regular self-reflection allows you to align your actions with your values and ensures that you are setting a positive example.

Through a personality assessment I help people to really get to know and understand themselves. This is so very important before you are able to fully align with those you want to influence.

2.Continuous Learning

Stay informed about industry trends, new technologies, and best practices. This not only keeps you relevant but also demonstrates your commitment to growth and development.

Leadership excellence is already an ‘every day occurrence’ so continuously keeping abreast of these things will just become part of another great example.

3.Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

Cultivate empathy by actively listening to your team members and understanding their perspectives. Emotional intelligence helps you navigate complex interpersonal dynamics and build stronger relationships.

I briefly addressed EQ in my 3rd newsletter and active listening in my 10th one on Coaching. The ability to really listen to the person in front of you is often under estimated, but extremely powerful.

4.Authenticity and Integrity

Be genuine in your actions and decisions. Authenticity creates trust, while integrity ensures that you consistently uphold ethical standards, even in challenging situations…. I would go as far as to say especially in challenging situations as that is where so often leaders fall by the way side when they do not have that solid foundation.

5.Adaptability and Resilience

Embrace change and remain flexible in the face of adversity. Demonstrating resilience and adaptability shows your team that you can navigate uncertainties and emerge stronger. (Both of those I discussed in the previous two Newsletters)

?Ensuring Constant Adaptation and Relevance

1.Seek Feedback

Regularly solicit feedback from your peers, mentors, and team members. Constructive feedback provides valuable insights into your leadership style and helps you identify areas for improvement.

In my Toastmasters journey it was always mentioned that feedback is the breakfast of champions.

2.Set Personal Development Goals

Establish clear and achievable goals for your personal and professional development. This keeps you focused on continuous improvement and ensures that you are always striving to be a better leader.

This will sustain and build your leadership excellence development.

3.Mentorship and Networking

Engage in mentorship, both as a mentor and a mentee. Networking with other leaders provides new perspectives and opportunities for growth, keeping you informed and inspired.

To give back is as important as to receive and connecting with like-minded and like-thinking people is invaluable, which can be even more powerful through synergy created in a true mastermind.

4.Embrace Innovation

Stay open to new ideas and approaches. Encouraging innovation within your team develops a culture of creativity and ensures that your leadership remains dynamic and forward-thinking.

I think we only have to look into the history books what happened to organizations where the leadership did not embrace innovation. Many struggled or completely disappeared, even though they were global entities on the Fortune 500 list….not exactly great role models.

Being a positive role model is not just about leading; it's about inspiring others to reach their full potential and creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

By embodying the traits of a positive role model and committing to continuous growth, you can elevate your leadership and make a lasting impact on your organization and beyond.

“Leadership is failing around the world due to a lack of values.” This is 100% true. Without trust in our leaders as role models, we flounder. Congratulations on another very informative and well-written article.

Jan Robberts i think this is so true - although news and media will always be negative. you could disappear for 20 years - come back - and their will always be crap about politics, war, murder, crime, etc.... I am a super positive person - I believe its essential for wellbeing - and its a choice. I think people over complicate it looking for some magic feeling. Similar to motivation - its a choice there is no magic formula to feeling positive, being nice, engaging with others, helping others, and looking for the best around you if you could summarise and pick 1 or 2 points - what advice would you give.

And I love the saying - “What you do speaks so loud that we cannot hear what you say." As a leader, your words and actions should always match??

There is so much truth in the intention of having a role model, mentor and coach.???? We always need an accountability buddy to guide us and a role model to look up to?? I think that having a role model allows us to see the impact of the characteristics they embody and the influence they command in their respective fields, which will allow us to observe, which traits suit us and how we can get there too?? Another great article...thank you Jan Robberts ?? You are one of my greatest teachers and role models too??
