Dutch government’s plan to save drinking water includes greywater recycling
The Dutch government has set out plans to conserve drinking water that include asking households and business to reduce consumption and greywater recycling.
The Dutch Drinking Water Policy Paper (2021-2026) aims to ensure high-quality drinking water for everyone in the European and Caribbean Netherlands. Updated in 2022, it promotes economical water use in collaboration with local authorities, water companies, and stakeholders. Rising demand and climate challenges necessitate an additional 100 million m3 of water annually by 2030.
To address this, the National Plan of Action (NPvA) targets reduced consumption, behavior changes, and improved water storage. Key goals include cutting per capita use from 125 to 100 liters per day by 2035 and promoting water-conscious construction. Efforts focus on household water-saving measures, innovative construction technologies, and diverse business solutions.
Google: Water stewardship and sustainability goals
In its latest Environmental Report 2024, Google has recognised the need for improved water stewardship practices across its data centres, offices and supply chain. The report revealed that the growth of AI had led to a 17 per cent increase in its water footprint in 2023 compared to the previous year, driven largely by cooling demands of its data centres.
The surge in AI products and services led to a 17% increase in Google's water usage in 2023, amounting to 6.1 billion gallons, equivalent to irrigating 41 golf courses annually in the southwestern US. Despite this rise, Google emphasizes its commitment to building energy-efficient infrastructure and responsible water practices. The company's Environmental Report 2024 highlights its efforts to support global water stewardship projects through innovative tools and partnerships.
Google's water stewardship efforts in 2023 included replenishing 1 billion gallons of water, launching 74 water projects across 46 watersheds, and setting a goal to replenish 120% of its freshwater consumption by 2030. The report details Google's sustainable practices across its offices and data centres, such as using reclaimed water and promoting water-efficient designs.
